Hi I have a normal royal python called Monty (I know my son named him..) he is approx a year old. We have him in a RUB, he was in a viv but he never came out so we though we would try him back in the RUB and he seems much happier! in fact he is hardly ever in! he's always out now.
I'm a bit worried that he's out TOO much (is that possible?) and last night for the first time he would not feed, just tried him again but he's not interested, he was more interested in getting out of his feeding tub!
I have also just put him on to weaner rats, he ate a small and a large last week, but refused the large last night/tonight. Was it too soon? should I try him with a jumbo mouse again?
Would really appreciate some help or just reassurance!

Happy royals don't move around too much. They only move to thermoregulate, hunt for food, and occasionally check the surroundings for more secure spots. They only move when it is dark unless they have to (temps and security).
Therefore, if a royal is moving a lot, especially during the day, he may be stressed out and is searching and searching for secure hides or better temperatures. And a stressed royal will not eat.
Give your royal a chance to settle (new surroundings can stress a snake out) for a few days without disturbance or handling. Make sure the temps and humidity are spot on. Offer food again in about a week. |

Welcome to the forum. Boomslang has it all covered. I think rubs are more like them living in a big hide than having hides within a big open space so they are more confident as they are inside their hides. Allow a bit of time to settle into its new environment and they should settle down and the biggest indicator of that is them eating.
These Royals do love to keep us guessing. |

Hi and welcome They really never come out that much in vivs full stop.Mine comes out anywhere from 6pm then stays out all evening/night.
Was he eating in the viv?They aren't active snakes,so basing a move on that alone.Isn't really something i'd do.
As for the food,I'd stick to one weaner and try again next week etc.See how you get on,he might not have been hungry this week.Or he's not eating cuz you changed his home.Try again next week at any rate. |
