Hello everyone, I have my first Royal and things seem fine so far. He struck and then abandoned his first mouse, but since then I heated them up a bit more and he has happily taken the last three weekly feeds. The dealer who bred him said he was "about 2 years old" and he is 2 feet long (the python, not the dealer..). Do you think this seem about right? |

Yeah under two :) the rest depends on if he fed or not etc.Might have been a poor feeder for months and months when young.Just say he's under a year old. :) Just spray the rub with water every day to up the humidity,until that bad shed is gone.Place something in there,or spray next time he goes into shed. |

I suspect he's more likely less than a year old..? He's is a normal and was £75 (they also had a similar sized female pastel at £150). He's a great little snake, eating and handling with no problems. He's just begun a moult (2 days), which is very messy in bits. Normal humidity at 50%+ but I've now added a wet sponge to warm end and now it's nearly 60%. Has a large water bowl in cool end big enough to climb in. Has shed head and underneath in small bits, but most of top of main body still in tact. In a big faunarium, so lots of ventilation affecting humidity I guess. Hope I don't have to bath or wet towel him... |

well its not two years old,only thing i will say is.Did they charge you for an adult?or more cuz they said it was 2 years old. |

Yep, it's no big deal more curiosity. Sorry for the delay in re-posting and I hope someone still reads this :( He is so well behaved when handled and very curious about everything. Anyway, he weighs 320g and is 24 inches long. Does that seem reasonable for 2 years-ish? He just seems a bit little to me, but hey, I what do I know (nothing..)! |

So like i said,they don't really know :P you'll only ever beable to guess the age.sounds like he's eating fine and stuff.So wouldn't worry about it to much :) |

Thanks for the replies. He came from Swallow Aquatics in Norfolk, whose livestock manager breeds Royals. But they didn't have records to back up the age and I just suspect it was more of a guesstimate. I just fed him again tonight and so I'll leave him alone for a couple of days - sorry for the delay ;) I have pretty much left him to settle and not handled him since he came home. He is still quite defensive and has struck the viv walls, but I stroked him slowly for a while earlier tonight and he was fine. I'm just trying to be patient and not stress him out as he's eating well. Mind you, I'm not sure which of us is more nervous until we're used to it!! I'll post his weight in a few days. Cheers. |

could be older,could be younger.if he's had afew owners or say it was a shop.I wouldn't rely on dates.if the breeder says hes nearly two,and he's had it since day 1.then you can only go by his word.
Just be happy he's eating and well :) weigh him and tell us :) |

Yeah weigh him,when he said about two years.That could mean anything,depending on where you got it. |

It's very hard to tell by length you'll have a better chance of understanding more if you weigh him and go by his weight :) |
