Posted - 14/05/2012 : 14:24:21 Hi all, Glad to be part of your community.
My wife and I have two snakes at present, a Royal Python (normal) who's been with us a little over a week and an Orange Normal Corn who we've had a good few months now.
I shall first introduce myself and then my snakes.
I tried in vain to join TCS but to be honest, here seems to have much more activity and the discussions I want. I'm into the housing and the technical side just as much as having these lovely animals as part of our family. My first contribution is I've taken photos of me building a VX36 and CX36 so as to make a guide for those in need and curious about Vivexotics. I've also found a LED Lighting setup for under £10 and if it works well I will post info.
I have always loved snakes and reptiles, I've had friends who have owned them and I have learnt a lot and handled many through them but have never had any myself due to my mother having a phobia of reptiles. She gets on edge when she comes over and keeps having to be re-assured that they won't get out or go anywhere near her. She's tried to overcome it but still can't so much as look at a photo of a croc. Snakes she's a tiny bit better with. We are hoping to rid her of her snake fear as the snakes grow. Most of our family aren't very accommodating and some have refused to come to see us at all point blank. To be fair, I don't give an aeronautical canine testicle and love my snakes and my wife and my friends that care enough to walk into our house. Our 'Snake Room' is also our Guest Bedroom so if you come to stay... you've gotta like them! If not, Tough!!!
I didn't know at all that my wife had such a love for reptiles, she's someone who has no interest in 'traditional pets' and is not a fan of dogs in the slightest. She isn't afraid, she just really does not like them at all. Something most Dog owners just can't understand. Anywho, our neighbours own snakes and one night when we went to chat with them, she held one of their Corns. She said to me that she'd really like a snake! I didn't think she had that kind of interest in them and was shocked to say the least.
We were told by our neighbours that about 10 mins up the road is an amazing family run Reptile and Exotics store and they have everything anyone could possibly need. They stock everything from Pill Bugs to DWAs and all the equipment, food and suchlike to look after them.
While there, we fell in love with a little corn snake, It was a very bright orange and had an amazing temperament. We were advised to come in on the following Monday as they would have a delivery and lots more snakes to choose from. In the meantime, we talked to our neighbour who was awesome enough to give us a 2ft viv and some hides that his had outgrown. We went back and the one we liked had gone but we found one that had an amazing character and picked up a full 'starter kit' from them as the hatchlings were a little too small to go into a viv yet!
In order to keep his temperature perfect (as I am still working on insulating the house) we put the faunarium inside the viv and wired everything in as if he was to be in there normally. He's a really happy chap and feeds incredibly well.
A couple of weeks ago, we went back into the shop to buy some food, aspen and some other stuff for him. We saw that they had got some Royal Python hatchlings in stock and decided to have a look at them. He sat still in my wife's hand and then I took him and he opened up and was all over me. Before we knew it, he won us over and we put down a deposit.
He was mid-shed and had no feeding record so we had to wait a week or so for the shop to get him to feed and for him to finish shedding.
In that time we bought what we needed and I rebuilt the 2ft viv, going to town on new fixtures and fittings so our corn could move into there. He's got a new 11x11 mat, 'habistat' mat-stat, vines, plants, hides, cork branches and blocks and cardboard tubes. He was outgrowing his faun and is now extremely happy, feeding and shedding and pooping well in his 2ft. He's still thin but not thin enough to escape and his length meant he wasn't happy in his faun.
The faunarium that the corn came out of was stripped out, disinfected, cleaned and fitted with new hides and suchlike ready for our new arrival, our Royal Python. He now lives in a faunarium on top of our 2ft and is happy as can be.
We also bought a vivexotic VX36 and cabinet in tobacco walnut. Sadly I am still waiting for the sealant to arrive from seapets so it's not in use yet. Once it's sealed, I will put a divider in place and set up the faunarium inside. The 2ft will then be placed on top and I will build racking around it for any future investments ;) This'll keep his temperature up where it needs to be (he will be statted for safety) and allow me to better regulate his humidity.
As for their character, The corn is a feisty thing and is an explorer. Obsessed with hair and glasses. Chops will wrap up around your glasses before you get a chance to stop. Now and again, we give chops a set of 3D cinema glasses now to keep entertained! They both get a rotation on the kit we have so as to keep them interested.
The Cornsnake we haven't had sexed yet, but call him a 'he' out of habit. Our Royal has been sexed as a Male. He's a timid thing but doesn't take long to uncurl himself (though sometimes needs a little persuasion) and will then go on a big explore. Most of the time he doesn't want to go back into his faun and wants to stay with you! Loves tickles under his head and is as friendly as can be. Never complains, doesn't dart around and is a soft, slow and friendly little thing. His first feed with us is tonight so am looking forward to see if he will eat!
Anywho I've gone on enough but yes, that's it really :) hope to be around here a lot more and will be mostly active in the technical side of keeping sections. TTFN :)
