Posted - 13/07/2012 : 20:00:53 Hello! Just thought I'd introduce myself, my name is Holly, I'm 21 and live with my fiancé. We recently decided to take the plunge and buy a snake. My fiancé had had snakes before and I have always loved snakes but was a bit dubious of having one...but after I held my brothers corn snake I decided that I wanted to get one too. So my fiancé and I looked around a lot of reptile shops, he didn't mind what snake we got as long as it wasn't a corn snake! We looked at what snakes would be good beginner snakes (for me) and we eventually concluded on a Royal Python. His/her name is Captain Cuddles (I named it ._.;;) He/she is almost 2 feet in length about 1 inch at the largest point. He/she eats small mice and has a loving temperament and loves to be cuddled (hence the name lol). Here is a photo of CC.

And your other hide and thermometers. |

Posted - 14/07/2012 : 18:47:58 If you are planning to eventually get rid of the mat what you could do to save buying another thermostat when you change to bulb is buy a pulse proportionate stat now which will run the mat and hold temps better on it then get a ceramic bulb when you decide to get rid of mat and the pulse prop will run this too. and surrey pet supplies is cheapest |

Holly.
I know it sounds bad,but that shop is **** they didn't even sell you a stat. |

Posted - 14/07/2012 : 18:37:20 Anyway you can keep the mat atm,and just get a mat stat and thermometers etc.But if you do change the mat later for a bulb, you will have to ofc buy another stat, when you change it.As the mat stat 100w won't be any good.
SO if you want to keep the mat for now you will need..

and pick up another hide,if you only have the one. |

Hello and welcome. Beautiful Royal you have there. You need 2 thermometers, one at each side of the vivarium and a thermostat to regulate the temperature of the heat mat so you dont burn your little snakey. Heat mats are no good for royals when they get bigger because their big bodies absorb all the heat (thermal blocking) and the thermostat will turn up the heat because it thinks it is cold, burning the snake.
I know it seems like we are having a go at you when you have just arrived here, but its for you and the snakes benefit. You would be very upset if it got injured. Too many pet shops sell these pets without the correct equipment so they can make an easy sale...its sad
You can use heatmats and alot of people do,better if there under the tank, this reduces the heat on the viv side,if said mat overheats or the probe moves etc etc.
The snake is not in direct contact with the mat. |

Posted - 14/07/2012 : 18:04:22 You can continue using the heatmat for now but you need one of these http://www.surreypetsupplies.co.uk/habistat-mat-stat-thermostat-100w.html
and as for thermometer i highly recommend this it has 3 probes which monitors cool and hot end temps plus humidity so no need for two thermometers and separate hygrometer, it has lots of functions too http://www.surreypetsupplies.co.uk/komodo-combined-digital-thermometer-and-hygrometer.html
but personally for heating i would purchase a ceramic or infrared heat bulb and dimmer thermostat or you can use a pulse proportionate thermostat with the ceramic bulb |

Posted - 14/07/2012 : 17:40:23 Thank you for the advice the shop said that the set up was fine but if think there is room for improvement then could you please suggest as to what could be changed? For example, how many thermometers do you think I should have and what kind of thermometers should I have?

Sorry to say this but...you really need to change afew things.
The stick on thermometer is worthless,it's not giving you the temps over/on the heatmat. And without a stat the mat is unregulated and will be getting to temps as high as 40c.
He still looks small,so the heatmat is ok for now,as long as you make afew changes.

Nice interesting patern on him/her with the solid gold blotches down the sides toward the tail rather than the normal "alien heads" |
