hi just purchased ( more like rescued ) a youngish male royal python , still has unshed skin on him vand his backbone is very visable :( , only got him friday evening but so far i have managed to bath him and get nearly all off his left over shed skin off and got him to eat a small rat . any advice would be more than welcome cause he seems very dehydrated at the moment . |

qiuck update on my new friend , got humidity up to 50/60% now , changed 5.0uvb lamp for a marine moonlight lamp , he fed again on sunday he demolished a spare pinkie my snowcorn did not want and then when i changed his water he decided my finger was a mouse !!! |

Sounds like you may have already got the major issues sorted. From here on on, make sure you have the basics covered .i.e temp and housing requirements and you'll be fine. All of which can be found on here with a minimum of searching

Hi and welcome to the forum. Well done for rescuing an animal in need. A bit of basic info for what you have mentioned.
Stuck shed is quite easy to sort out, I have had a few that have needed a bit of help. What I do is put them in a damp pillowcase for 20-30 minutes, and just leave them to it, you can hold them at the same time to get them to wriggle but the moisture itself should be enough to soften any stuck bits. As they slide out gently create a tiny bit of pressure and most of the skin should come off. The only important bits to ensire are clear of retained skin is their eyes and their tail, everywhere else is not really a big deal they will just look a bit scruffy. Retained eyecaps give the eye a cracked or crinkly look (also a symptom of dehydration but I'll get to that). The tail has to be kept clear of retained skin as it can from a tight band and cause the tail to die off but this doesn't happen quickly and the pillowcase trick should fix it.
Eating is great a good sign its not stressed out so thats a good sign. You dont want to over do it though with food, they are built to digest slowly so you want to feed something 10-15% of the snakes body weight 5-7 days apart, the exception being you dont want the rat to be thicker than the snake is. You are also as well to start smaller and work up to bigger prey items get the digestive system ticking over and ready for action.
Dehydration is quite easy to diagnose, you use the skin pinch test, they have baggy skin around their neck, you can gently pinch a part of it, it should fall back quite quickly, if it sits up (tents) to a point and doesn't fall back quickly then its likely dehydrated, if it is eating and has water available then thats about all you need to do to fix it just monitor it make sure it rights itself in a day or 2, you can also get some reptoboost for the water to help the snake along.
As for the other bits and bobs, the general keeping section gives you loads of information about how to keep Royals, the importance of thermostats, temperatures etc.
Good luck getting this fella back to health and dont hesitate to ask anything you can possibly think of and enjoy your new snake too, they are very rewarding animals to keep. |
