Ziska, my gopher snake, arrived last April in a cricket box, a 'well grown' hatchling, the shop said, 'with an attitude to match', and they were right.

Gopher hatchlings are unusually long and they're greedy eaters, so by July she'd grown a bit - and so had the attitude ...

Now, six months later, posed on the same scruffy cat towel on the bed ...

Quite a difference, and still got the attitude to match!

After this pic was taken, she coiled up on the bed, hissing loudly and making terrible faces, and dared me to pick her up, so I accepted the dare and got headbutted. She zoomed straight for my face, but I know her by now and kept still while she wrapped herself round my shoulders, still swearing, and then flung out her front end to explore the top of the viv stack.

When she's in this mood it's like wrestling with a very lively and argumentative length of hosepipe. I put her in a pillowcase to bring her back downstairs - much safer.

She's still in it now, curled up on my lap. Likes it in there, she says.

Hmmm....till, while leaving her back end still in position to lull me into a false sense of security, her front end goes off on a crafty investigation ...the last time she did this, she was in my sweater and suddenly leapt off into nowhere and frightened the life out of me until I ran her to earth, under Shadrach's viv.

Came out good as gold and rather pleased with herself - and that is one benefit of her increase in size. She may still have an attitude to match it - but if she does ever go walkabout again, she's a lot easier to find ...

Thanks for looking!

Lol Chris I'd love to - but only if by some miracle I moved into a bigger house. I have room for Sulah's and Shadrach's 4' vivs should they need them (expect they will) but then that is IT ...

Unless of course I got rid of some more furniture of course ...hmmm...goes and eyes up back bedroom ...

chrisc Posted - 04/02/2012 : 15:54:26
the bloke wanted £40 each for my 2 but got both an a rub for £60, bargain
n/a Posted - 04/02/2012 : 15:48:02
Thanks Paulie.

Hey Bob if that gopher was £60/80 and albino then if you prefer normals you should be able to pick one up for £40/50. That's pretty reasonable for a shop price and I thought they were dearer in NI. I like normals better too. You'll have to build another viv though - Ziska must be a year or so and in her 5' viv, she can nearly stretch out from end to end; they're very errm, vigorous and go zooming about like racers, so imo they need the space.

Hope you get one!

I didn't look/ask. If I don't look I can tell myself they are too expensive. I think it was either £60 or £80 but in my mind add an extra 0 to curb the urge.

Oh sorry - Lotabob - I missed your post - thanks and YES!!! Gopher it!!

Ah, that figures, Chris - Shadrach came from a breeder and he's so calm, nothing like Ziska.

Yes, I'd be interested to know how much they're charging in NI, Bob - I paid £30 for Shadrach, but £80 for Ziska, although the same shop was charging £70 for a het albino gopher, think it was a male, recently.

these 2 the bloke bred himself so think they were handled more than a shop would. their 15 months now.

lotabob just out of interest what are they asking for the gopher and bull in the shop?
n/a Posted - 04/02/2012 : 15:00:05
Thanks - she was carrying on alarming and striking at the glass, but as soon as I opened the door she just glared ...then once I'd closed the door again, she started again ...lol.

Shadrach only hisses when his mouth is full of mouse (understandable) but Ziska hisses and tail rattles and everything ...your bulls sound much better socialised than she was; as far as I know she was in the shop for quite a while before I bought her and so perhaps it's lack of handling from an early age that causes the 'attitude' thing. She does seem to be calming down around me though, well, a bit.

great pic.
yes have noticed that, a few times when ive picked up ivan hes managed to wrap around both hands which makes it interesting.
my 2 never seem to hiss just tail rattle, when first got them the female hissed once of twice an that was it.
i just get evil stares an tails rattleing like mad
Lotabob Posted - 04/02/2012 : 14:42:46
She is stunning they have a albino gopher in the shop by me and I'm just so tempted but I think Ziska looks so much nicer. They also have an adult bull, he is a stunning looking beast.
n/a Posted - 04/02/2012 : 14:32:59
Yeah, have you noticed that they like to wrap their tail round one of your hands so that you've only got one hand to control the front end with? They're not daft!
