For the boa owners out there I just wanted to know how often you feed yours? I got my first boa about 12 weeks ago and he's been a bit of a fussy eater. (Only eaten twice) I was offering every week but was going to change to ever 10-14 days or so as it seems a waste to keep throwing rats away! He's 4.5ft and 1.6kg.
Thanks

Thought id give an update on my fussy boa incase anyone else is having similar issues. Ive now worked out what hes all about. He will only eat ALL white rats, even rats with tiny markings he wont eat, and will only take it when ive left the room. Every 10-14 days he takes a rat now and i weighed and measured him he is 4.7ft and 1.9kg so his weight is finally going up! shame he still hides 24/7 though!

Cheers! Yea it is a relief! Felt like doing a not so manly squeel when I saw it gone lol. Just managed to resist!

Haha excellent stuff. Is a huge relief when they eat. Happy for ya

Well today I tried feeding and he struck! Then left it :( I'll leave it over night though
phlegmatical Posted - 09/06/2013 : 12:47:00
I'm not so stressed anymore because he's at least moving around!
Foremand Posted - 09/06/2013 : 12:04:21
Yeah take the run away and just give it a couple weeks. Don't stress about refusing a feed.

Well last night was the night (couldnt wait till Sunday so just fed 1 day later than normal) And.... Refused :( I was really hopefull this time as I've left the lid off his rub that's in his viv the last few days and he's been moving around and climbing on the branch I have in there! I think he prefers it tbh! I think I'm going to take away the rub tonight and turn the ceramic back on then leave him for 2 weeks and try again
phlegmatical Posted - 06/06/2013 : 21:30:06
Yea ur probably right. I'll give him a try Sunday night
Foremand Posted - 06/06/2013 : 21:23:08
Might be worth starving him for couple days longer? Wouldn't hurt him. I've done that once or twice.
phlegmatical Posted - 06/06/2013 : 21:13:05
Thanks. Today he has moved around more than he has the whole time I've had him! All is looking good for a feed! Probably shoukdnt say that until he does though lol

could maybe try a gerbil or very small guinea pig if you could find one, finger's crossed he take's the rat after his clear out
phlegmatical Posted - 06/06/2013 : 06:34:38
I've tried chicks and mice. I only got 1 rat left so I'll use that Friday then I'm open to suggestions :)

he look's a nice healthy shape/size from the pic, only time ive weighed a boa is william just out of interest really

i go by the body shape if they have a square ish shape to them like your's that's a healthy shape, it's when they look round that their a bit chubby.

keep us updated on the stool sampele.
are you going to try a different food with the next feeding?

Decided to take him to a vet this afternoon for a check up.he said everything was fine but the only thing he was worried about was a gurgling squelchy sound half way down (which I asked about on another thread) and next time he poos I have to take in a sample as he thinks it's something internal

here is a picture of him. Does he look underweight at all? I can't find a good example of what a 4.5ft boa should weigh!
Foremand Posted - 02/06/2013 : 21:08:15
Yeah that could be the reason lol good old clear out may be the answer.
phlegmatical Posted - 02/06/2013 : 20:53:55
Well after being out all day I came back to the worst stench in every room of the house. Boris has done the biggest poo! It was almost wider than him! Hopefully this might mean he will eat his next meal! Not going to try for another week though

I've tested both means of feeding with my boa and he's superb with both so if I'm lazy I drop feed if not hell strike :-)
