It's incredible what you start to learn and find when getting a different pet.

i always thought it was where they stored calcium but just checked an it's basically just a big scale called a subtympanic shield
male's have larger one's that female's an is supposedly one way to sex them but not accurate similar to trying to sex snake's by their anal spur's i suppose

When I was a kid I worked in a reptile store that had the most angry iggy I've ever seen, only one bloke in the shop was allowed to work with her and she would tail whip the glass door, you'd hear the snap and crack from the opposite end of the shop!

Mine really didn't like my mam every time she came into my room the iguana went nuts, then my mam had a strange dream that the iguana was wearing her dressing gown and chasing her around the house, my mam is nuts pmsl

Haha yes they can cause some very nasty wounds if they bite, their nails are just as bad
These scratches are from another iguana that came into the rescue yesterday, stings a bit today

Yea as carlb says it can hurt and break the skin with a big iguana she did try to whip us when trimming her claws yesterday
Its deceving how strong they are when your trying to hold them still

Silly question but is a tail whip painful?
Foremand Posted - 14/10/2013 : 10:54:06
She looks lovely Chris. I'm sure with your magic hands she'll be tame in no time.
chrisc Posted - 14/10/2013 : 10:01:30
I may get tempted to keep her should be building a taller enclosure soon.
Shes not too bad an can be handled but will tail whip at times and is not a fan of being picked up if on the floor.
BlueDragon Posted - 14/10/2013 : 08:33:01
She's lovely : )

Can you handle her? She seems quite tame and curious in the photos.
