Was browsing the internet today (royals & other exotics as per lol) only to find out you could get miniature horses & pigs as pets. Many sites even say the pigs can be trained in the same way you would with a dog! The hedgehogs are something called a African Pygmy Hedgehog..and they are adorable! Maybe this could be my new addiction?!...We'll just have to see Not sure what people would make of miniature domesticated pigs and hedgies tootling around a densly populated area of Glasgow, eh? Has anybody else heard of any weirdly exotic pets such as these, or maybe even GOT one ??

You're right. I remembered it wrong. I was told by a pretty experienced keeper on the darkside that they get grumpy during the day and that she wouldn't recommend them as pets for my kids because they can be bitey if disturbed which, let's face it, the kids would probably do. My bad

One of those large hexagonal indoor aviaries would be ok for a couple as long as you let them out to exercise daily. Out-of-cage exercise consisting mainly of climbing up the curtains and leaping across the room. Very jealous if you do get some. They look fun. There is a forum exclusively for suggies but I can't remember the addy. The people on there are very knowledgable and taught me a lot about them.

The normal/standard behavior of the African Pygmy Hedgies is very similar to that of the under age Stella drinker so be prepared to be bitten on a regular basis if you try to wake them during the day. Very grumpy, very nocturnal animals.

Sugar Gliders are brilliant but require lots of patience and, probably most importantly, a carefully monitored balanced diet. We're not talking "make sure that they get 5 a day" type balanced diet here but ensuring that the ratio of phosphates, salts, sugars, etc are EXACTLY right. Your gorgeous little pair (suggies MUST be kept as at least a pair) of suggies will go downhill rapidly and die if their diet is not exactly right. They also pretty much constantly pee and defecate so their very large cage will stink along with most of the floor of the house where they live. They are also very noisy at night. We're not just talking about hamster style whizzing around in their wheel here. They yell at each other ALL NIGHT LONG and have no concept of talking quietly .

Mini/micro pigs still need a DEFRA licence/transport order (not sure of the correct term) every time they need moving from point A to point B. They are still classed as domestic livestock so you can pretty much forget taking it for a walk to the shops. Shame really cos they are v. cute.

I have researched all of the animals you have mentioned with a view to adding them to our own collection and am still researching sugar gliders because we are considering a trio of suggies. I'm not trying to put you off getting them but I'd rather you knew what you were letting yourself in for in advance .

Sound advice there Miss Cat. I quite fancy a micro pig, but they need outdoor space and we don't really have any. They're very cute though!
MissCat Posted - 11/01/2010 : 11:20:04
They are all cool, but as with all exotic pets, require very specialist care/housing etc so make sure if you are serious about getting one, to research until you are practically an expert, BEFORE you get one.

All the pictures that you'll find of the micro pigs are of ones that are only a few days old. Guessing the hedgehogs are probably the same. The micro pigs actually grow to around 14 inchs high. Doesnt stop the Mrs still wanting one though
