hi i was thinking of getting a baby bearded and puting it in my old royals vivarium, it is a 2 foot plastic vivarium (the make is pennine if that helps). the man in the pet shop said that the uv bulb would melt the tank, i was just wondering if any one has used one before |

In general, heat lamps are better for beardies as they bask under them. heat mats only tend to get used at night when the lights are off, but I have never bothered with one. Your baby will outgrow the plastic tank pretty fast as well. Personally I would be more inclined to get a 3ft wooden viv as it would last longer; you can pack it out with extra decor if needs be.
I use a min. 10% uv tube that runs the length of the viv and a 100 watt spot bulb (guarded)on a dimmer stat. heat and light is on 10-12 hours a day (goes off on a timer) and 14 hours a day in summer. At night time I have no heating as my living room remains at around 20-22*c over night, but if it got much lower than that I would consider putting in a heatmat (on a mat stat) or a ceramic bulb- which i would prefer- (on a pulse stat) just to keep him snug.

the viv is the same as that one, so do you not need a a heat lamp? would a florescent light be ok with a heat mat? i will be getting a wooden viv when the beardie gets bigger but i already have a 2 foot plastic one so wounderd if this could be used |

Those vivs have been known to warp with the heat. A close friend of mine has one for her royal, heated with a ceramic bulb...it's warped and very difficult to open/close the door. but still functional. |

Can you post some pics of the plastic tank? I think I can see what pet shop guy was on about but pics would confirm if what I'm thinking is right or not.

Don't they need a basking lamp as babies? I thought they did but just at a lower temp than the adults. |
