Posted - 17/03/2011 : 13:12:08 Are common boas easy to keep?
Theres an 8ft one someones got for sale n both me and my wife would love to have her but, common sense (dont you just hate it sometimes lol) tells me it would be better getting a hatchling since we've no experience with bigger snakes. Im losing the battle with the wife lol which is the weird bit concidering she wasnt too keen on snakes until i got orlina. To try put her off i said it'll be guinea pigs that we feed her possibly rabbits and she said as long as its me that feeds her its fine
Im 6 ft 5 built like a brick sh*t house so i could handle her size and weight but told the wife she wont be able to sit with her round her neck like Orlina and she said its fine because she can still sit with her when im there with her. The boa is "rediculously tame" and is handled often never biten or struck at anyone
Is there a great reason i shouldnt get her? We'd love her but i thought i would get an opinions from other large snake keepers. Obiously i would know everything i could know before she came. I know she could possibly reach 10 ft. We have the room (she comes with 6.5ft viv) and a lock would be kept on the room door as well so no other pets could get in and would only be handled in that room with closed doors so no other pets can come in.
Except for size, type of food and space requirements is there any difference in the upkeep between common boas and royals |

Posted - 22/03/2011 : 13:41:58 I dont need to cos your gonna find that out very soon! They very truly are AMAZING!
Boris is my baby, he is just so kind and sweet natured, so far i have wrestled him to get him into his viv, covered him in frontline, dragged him out of his viv when he didnt want to come and still, every time he has rewarded me with his lovely, gentle, sweet natured, cuddles!
I'm just exagerating the floods but by the same token you need to know what its like to own a big snake so at least yoiu wont get any big shocks! |

Posted - 21/03/2011 : 19:51:26 Boas are the only snakes im scared of, this'll be a great way to conquer the fear and im jumping in at the deep end getting an adult female, I wouldnt recommend it to anyone but I have a strong network of snake keepers to help me out so I feel prepared to keep her in a great setup and handle her without fear! Can't wait im so excited.

Posted - 21/03/2011 : 19:42:44 Wow, just caught up with this thread.....Go kelf go! woo hoo! You are just going to love this girl!
I'm so in love with Boris, seriously, boas are wonderful! my boy had me by the throat tonight and i actually couldn't breath for a moment! (he didn't mean to) but the sense of strength and sheer power that they have is fab, then with one gentle hand you can release them, just like that....gentle giants and big softies!
Enjoy! |

Posted - 21/03/2011 : 18:51:57 LOL - you'd have had a carriage to yourselves - and I bet no-one would've checked your tickets!
I bought a corn snake in Halifax bus station today (mind you went and sat in their car just to have her out for a quick inspection.)
She's gorgeous, and now home with me.
And ... I get my bus pass in less than 18 months - be able to travel for free!
I plan to be the first pensioner in raggy combats, matted dready long hair ... and carrying snakebox under arm lol |
