Hi

Firstly, I'm not planning to rush out and buy another snake, I'm still learning with the one I've got, but I am tempted to look for something bigger maybe later in the year / next year. Burms and retics are pretty much out as they're *huge* when adult, but I do quite like the look of a couple of the boas. Commons and Dumeril's have particularly attractive markings and seem to be a good size ie large but not man-eating.

So, what are they like to keep? I've had a look through several care sheets and it looks as though their requirements are not too far from that of a Royal, although recommended viv sizes have ranged from five to eight feet. I'd consider it pretty much essential for me to see an adult before taking one on as I know they're still a large snake and I'd much rather find out exactly how large it's likely to get before buying one. We're planning to attend at least one of the reptile shows listed on here, do you think there may be some adults?

<edit> If anyone wants to tell me that I'm too inexperienced and to stick to something smallish like Royals, feel free I won't be offended.

Unfortunately not. They were born in September, during which time we were in the middle of a major building project so we had no money or indeed a downstairs!

Ah, I thought someone had said something about them being like the best bits of a royal and a corn, but I couldn't find the post. I'll be watching the York reptile night thread with interest, I wish I lived closer to York it'd be nice to meet some of you and your reps.

Excellent news mate. Glad she got back to you . I think GP summed it up best when she said that Dums are like all the best bits of a corn and a royal rolled into one.

Well, I spoke to Dianne (who sounds lovely by the way) over the weekend. There is no indication of when her female may give birth except that she's 12 months gone at the moment and she held on to her last litter for 17. The babies could be here anytime now or in another five months! Either way, one of them has my name on it.

Gingerpony Posted - 05/06/2009 : 14:20:42
yay! Dummie heaven awaits!
chris100575 Posted - 05/06/2009 : 08:42:18
Dianne's gotten back to me! Her female hasn't given birth yet, and apparently last time she took 17 months(!) so it's just a matter of waiting. She's sent me her phone number, so hopefully we'll have a chat over the weekend.

There could be a Dumeril's in my future!

I've still not had a reply from the dark side, so no news on a Dum yet.

Here's some pics from the dark side to wet your apetite. It's the litter that The Hoff came from (he's no.3). There's some pics of the parents on the thread somewhere too.

Not yet, according to her profile info on the dark side she's not been on since 11:15ish yesterday morning which was before I PM'd her. Mum's a big girl! I love Princess but she's hardly been out of her cave for over a week now. I wouldn't swap her, but it'd be nice to have a snake I got to see. I've been waiting for a reply with baited breath, I'm quite excited at the thought of getting a Dums!

JCP's for me my friend. Might actually get to see a snake then instead of a empty viv. Might be able to handle them with out fear of months of not eating...

Come on Daz. Be honest with yourself. You know that you need a Dumerils in your life
dazb Posted - 29/05/2009 : 19:26:07
