Is it safe to paint the MDF? If so would odourless paint be ok? I've got everything to build a new viv except the wood, hoping to buy plain MDF then paint it, is there any chance of this harming monty????

No chance as long as it's completely dry and aired for a week or so, using a water based paint or quick dry varnish is best (lowest odours) but if your definately getting MDF I suggest getting an MDF primer/sealer first other wise it'll just soak straight in and you'll have to give it a fair few coats.
