Posted - 15/05/2012 : 14:16:51 Hello People
The viv building is going well, but now I need to order in what will be the glass doors and get the air vents sorted, any idea if there is anything special I need in terms of glass? Obviously I don't want something Pandora is going to break :O
Also anyone know anywhere I can pick up cheap air vents from? :)
Cheers |

Posted - 02/06/2012 : 17:03:12 My dad owns a glazing company, which I currently work for. We ofter fit Aluminum runners in offices which have small wheels built into the runner. So even the bigger glass slides with ease. I have tried to find some online to show you, but can't. I will try and find out which supplier we gett them from when i'm back in work next week. Also these could give you another option? - http://www.indiamart.com/mohit-plastic/glass-runners.html
6mm Toughened would be ideal for a viv of that size I think. 5' x 4' will be pretty heavy, and I wouldn't of thought you could slide it suitably without wheels of some sort. |

Posted - 02/06/2012 : 16:17:16 you could always try ebay for runners i think they have alley ones on there which would be better for that weight in glass although plastic wont have as much screach when you slide them open. there are all sizes of rails and vents on ebay.good prices too |

Posted - 21/05/2012 : 10:02:15 Looking into runners for the glass now, does anyone know of any runners that will make life easier since each glass door is going to be 5' by about 4' and very heavy 6mm toughened :P going to be a pain dragging that across a regular plastic runner |

just chip away at it to make it look stoney like
or maybe get a poly box cut it down to the height you want pop the bowl in then your the left over polystyrene to wedge into the gaps and stick together with aquarium sealant

Posted - 15/05/2012 : 15:22:50 Yeah looks like it, thanks. I was looking at a cube of polystyrene today the idea was to put the giant water bowl into it, then carve the poly, grout and paint it to look like rock. They wanted bloody £95 for the cube!! Any other ideas? |

Posted - 15/05/2012 : 15:18:16 Yes set lengths of like 2,3,4,5,6 foot
Looks like the max they can send with royal mail is 1.5 meters You may have to buy another strip then cut off what you need and add
That ad said 6 foot so if you order another 4 foot there will be enought |

Posted - 15/05/2012 : 14:47:41 Where do I get the runners for the glass? Will the place building the glass for me supply them or do I need specific runners for the sheet of glass? O.o total DIY noobie. |

Posted - 15/05/2012 : 14:36:05 Hi Kelf, for the size you'd need I'd use at least 6mm toughend, but 8mm would be best I think, as far as air vents go I got mine from a local hardware store but you can get them from B&Q all be it a little more expensive (well they would've been for me anyway lol) the ones I used were the large rectangular vents with the louvre fronts to stop insects getting in, I'll try and find a link for you, gald to hear the build is going well don't forget pic's, if your using the double skin I mentioned you could leave a hole in the outer one and put the vent inside the viv on the inner one or you could use the ones they put on cooker extractor fans which use a tunnel between the inner and outer walls. Hope that waffle helps lol
This link should show you the sort of thing I ment. http://www.sdslondon.co.uk/grilles-and-vents.html?gclid=CN2Z7Yq1grACFUxlfAod6H5kHA I used the one on the second row down and forth one along... |
