well i had always promised myself i would get creative with maya's final viv when i eventually bought it.
well last week the viv arrived so had been planning the background build.
i will be posting each stage as best i can on here.

what i used:
4x2 piece of hardwood
tools for cutting etc.
2 cans of expanding foam
lots of cork bark
1 branch

heres the board all measured up with the vents and the shelf

i then drilled holes in the circle parts of the vents to make it easier for me to be able to cut out the vents

at this stage i had cut the whole thing out, and also cut a groove where the shelf will lye. heres a picture of it done with the shelf in place to make sure it fits

i then played around with where everything (cork bark and branch) was going to go and decided on this:

i had to screw the branch into place as there wasnt much of the branch touching the board to make it stick with the foam.

i then used the expanding foam to stick all the cork bark pieces down. i then started filling in the gaps. unfortunalty i only bought 1 can and it was clearly not enough. this is what i have done so far and will be going back to b&q on tuesday to get another can to fill the rest in.

i had to use a book and a plant pot to hold the cork bark down as the foam pushed it up as it expanded.

i will keep this updated as i go along with pictures.

Nice job Danny well done, are you able to spray the soil to increase the humidity if you need to?

not sure if youd be able to spray it as it could make the silicone fall away from the soil and the expanding foam, but could always try it

i forgot to take pictures of the whole thing with foam on and got a bit carried away.
last night after work i sat and carved out all the vents and shelf area.

this morning i checked if it still fit in the viv (and yes it did)

i then started on the final bit. covering it in soil. i used the brown silicone as the glue. i had bought 2 tubes of it thinking it would plenty and sat and started it today. heres how much 2 tubes did

so when the father gets home im off to b&q to go and get another 2 tubes.
this is working out quite expensive now, although should hopefully be worth it.

*update*
went and bought another can of foam today and finished off the rest of the background, and cut out all the vents at the top. waiting for the bottom to dry and then the edges and bottom vents and groove for shelf will be cut out. that will probably get done after work tonight.
will upload a pic of the whole thing covered at 3 when the mother gets home with the camera
