Posted - 05/11/2012 : 08:32:47 Hi all. I picked up my new royal girl yesterday and she's beautiful. She's on a mat and stat. I know this isn't ideal but she's only in a glass tank until she's big enough for her viv with ceramic light. When I attached the mat and stat it got to 30oC then switched off. I know this is because mat got to right temp but it hasn't switched back on and mat feels cold. I don't want to stress her out anymore by fussing with the mat ect. Anyone know what the problem could be? |

Posted - 05/11/2012 : 13:19:38 All that worrying for nothing! Temp is at 33.2 highest and drops to 30 before turning on again. Also brought her more plants and another hide. My new little lady seems happier!! |

Posted - 05/11/2012 : 11:40:45 Thanks for all the advise. Hopefully her temps will be sorted by tonight. It's nice finally being on a forum where everybody is friendly and doesn't slate everyone. |

Posted - 05/11/2012 : 11:05:59 you could make a wooded frame/box with something to insulate it round 3 sides this may help keep the heat it but it also depends on how warm your house is if its warm most of the time it wont be too bad but if its cold like mine the heat will get lost fairly quickly |

Posted - 05/11/2012 : 11:01:20 There's a ventilation panel along one side. If I cover the top that should be enough. I have just turned my stat up to 32 and its warming up and turning off. Just bout to go buy a digi thermometer. Maybe more than the one that's on order but I'm worried bout her! Don't want her freezing. |

Posted - 05/11/2012 : 10:23:35 You need your hot spot to be 30-35c
It's a shame about the tank, maybe you could try to sell it to get some of your money back? The rub will cost no more than £10-15 depending on size
Wrapping up the tank may help, especially the top but don't forget to allow for ventilation still |

Posted - 05/11/2012 : 10:13:03 Is there no way I can keep the tank just til she's bit bigger? Spent 70 on tank without the heat mat and stat! What if I was to wrap up? What is the ideal hot spot temp? |

Posted - 05/11/2012 : 10:07:53 Like Chris has said earlier, a real useful box (rub) is a great alternative to a glass aqurium. They're cheap, easy to keep clean and most importantly they hold heat so much better than glass, especially when you're using a heat mat
Slide the mat under the rub, place the temp probe in the rub (close to the bottom/on the floor of the rub) use a thin layer of substrate, newspaper works well and is cheap (obvs Lol) pop the snake in. Stand back and admire your work :) elaborate doesn't always = better
Leave the aqurium to the fish and pop your little snakey friend into something it'll love ;) |

Posted - 05/11/2012 : 09:30:29 only a little un then a 12ltr rub would do or a 30ltr with plenty of hides and plants hide behind for cover. dunlem mill do cheap fake plants if there is one near you.
hers is kelfezonds video on how to setup a rub http://www.youtube.com/watch?list=UU5TjQ5DLV79Vg2VP6E-y2jw&feature=player_detailpage&v=kTfhXMYh4cg |

Posted - 05/11/2012 : 09:16:40 I have no idea how old roughly 8 ish months I think maybe less. The reptile shop had her for a few months. She's fairly long maybe 1 and half foot. When can she go in a 4ft viv? |

Posted - 05/11/2012 : 09:08:34 once you get the thermometer you can set the temps properly. glass tanks are not very good at keeping the heat in, you would be better getting a RUB one of the really usefull boxes with the locking lid. how old/long is she roughly? they are noctural so will me more active in the evening/night and tend to hide away during the day although some will be out more than others. our body temp is around 37c if i remember right so she may feel a little cold |

Posted - 05/11/2012 : 08:59:10 I brought the snake for my son (and his daddy) but I am totally in live with her, she's so placid and beautiful! I have a ministat 100 temp at the mo is just on a dial thermometer but digital ones should hopefully be in today. I'm just worried as when we got her home she was inquisitive and from about 5ish last night to now she's just been in her hide. She feels cold to the touch too. |

Posted - 05/11/2012 : 08:42:37 if you need to move her to sort out the temps needs to be done so dont worry. how are you measuring the temps? if you are using a microclimate mat stat there is 5-6c difference between on and off so you want it to cut out when the digital thermometer reads around 33-34c and it should cut back in around 29-30c ish then the average temp on the mat will be around 32c
congrats on the new addition |
