Am hoping you guys can help!
Have just recieved a male cb11 as an early xmas present.
He seems very short at only about 20 inches; the store he comes from says he was not eating well, but has ate the last three meals.
He was sold with a three foot viv; currently he is in a 11 by 7 inch plastic travel container in the viv. I would love to let him loose in the viv (with hides etc), but do not want to stress him; he has already refused a fluff (recommended by store). He looks very cramped in the container!
We are in doubt as to release him yet, and also when to start handling him and try and feed him again.
Sorry if these questions have already been answered; I have trawled the forums and some other websites but would really appreciate specific advice!

More so costs :)
Anyway,you can just use the viv or go get a small rub,or exo terra type faunarium for now. :) Where ever you put him,Leave him for around a week to settle in.Then try feeding etc after that. |

The vivarium will come in handy eventually so don't worry too much about that, shops will always sell you the most expensive stuff they can get away with.
I dont know if you've heard of RUBs, they are a brand of plastic box(Really useful Box) and have locking handles that hold the lid shut, with a little bit of modifying they make excellent snake boxes. My local Tesco has the 9L ones for £6 so maybe a good place to start.
Anyway if this snake is a 'problem' feeder then it will be better to keep them in a smaller space, it goes against normal thinking with pets but the smaller the space the better. What type of heating method did they give you? Ideally you need a heat mat when using a tub, and all heat sources need a thermostat to control the temperature and also prevent overheating and burns. There is loads of info in the general keeping section about setting up RUBs and faunariums (a different type of plastic tub with a black vented lid), you cant go far wrong having a trawl through the stickies and on the front page is a lovely care sheet.

Am hoping to put 9 litre container within the vivarium - do you think this should work? I am looking forward to seeing him with a bit more room...
The setup was sold to us from a reptile shop; as a newcommer to the world of royal pythons I feel they have taken advantage. I am worried that they took the opportunity to sell a problem snake along with the most expensive kit! I want to whats best for him, but I am concerned that an undersized snake might continue not eating. I really dont want to take him back as I feel quite attached to him!

As has been said I'd keep him in a rub as they can be very nervous snakes sometimes and especially as he is a bad feeder. Was he from a reptile shop or a normal pet shop as its strange they sold him with a 3ft viv although at least u are sorted for when he is older |

I'd pop him in a 9l RUB with 2 hides heat mat on 30% of the floor space the viv is too big for him. how deep is the viv? I would handle it a few times a week no more than once a day for 5-10 mins to start with until he eats and has settled down, it may be defensive to start but when it realises you are the boss and will handle him when you want he should become more docile. I'd offer food every 5-7 days until he gets in routine and go to weekly feeds. |
