Posted - 13/08/2013 : 14:50:22 My male Mojave - Anubis - only broke his winter fast for chicks. No to rats, No to mice, No to multis, No to any of the above being dress, scented, blooded, etc with chick.
It's been chicks only for months. His weight has been good, not loosing anymore, but not really gaining at a rate I would expect, but otherwise active & healthy.
Many will say "eating is eating with Royals", others react in horror at a chick only diet, but my own personal preference is to get him back onto rats.
Searching various forums (I think this one came from The Dark Side) some people with a similar problem had success stitching a rat to the rear end of the chick. Tom Six would be proud...
So after an excellent Sunday @ Kempton and spending too much money the Sunday evening defrost schedule had two extra weaner rats added to it. Disposing with the stitching idea (thread + snake tummy didn't seem much of a good idea) I prepared two ricks / chiats by tying the back legs of a chick around the torso of a rat, just under the shoulder.
Offered rats and mice were refused so the ricks / chiats were left in and, blow-me-down, he polished them both off - chick head first - with no issues!
I didn't have the presence of mind to photograph the process, but I will next time.
It could be a one off, but fingers crossed.
If you are having the same issue, give it a go!

Posted - 13/08/2013 : 16:26:50 Wow, thats interesting. Mine is currently only eating gerbils/ multis. I dont mind too much, it can just mean driving a bit further to get food and paying more for it. Always have to ring ahead to make sure the shops have them. |
