Hi there,
Just a little curious: I think my Royal is getting viv defensive. For example, all I have to do is walk by the viv and he will lift his head and put himself into the 'S' position. However, when I then open the door, put my hand in, he's then fine after a sniff of my fingers. Is this a bad thing? I'm not sure if he's happy and trying to defend his space, or is insecure with his 'home' and territory.
I removed quite a lot of foliage and quite a lot of his hide in the hot end (which was a hanging basket liner, made of a hessian type material, which I kept finding him poking his head through and ripping it apart!) but dug a crater under some plants instead, which he has been through, but not actually stayed in. He seems to be keeping to the cold end - should I put some of the liner back in?

I wouldnt even say that is "viv defensive"
It's a very natural position to assume the S shape.
If it's not attacking you as you put your hand in, it aint viv defensive. :) |

Thanks everyone, but as I said, he's perfectly fine when I go to get him out, and is perfectly happy on the rug on the floor and even enjoys a 'walk' outside on the lawn. He's recently got back on the food after 9 months of hibernation, and is eating off tweezers within 4 or 5 seconds of me putting the rat in. I'm not sure what to make of it all...
Some of the hide I've put back, and he's had a sniff and a wander, but returned to his cold hide. I presume it's just a waiting game to see if he goes in eventually.

As what baobab say. Most possibly because of removing/moving bits. Stick some of the viv back in and see how he is. Every time he goes to an S shape. Maybe try n handle to him get used to you and In long run not feel threatened? |

Possibly it's because his set up has been changed. By removing the foliage, he might feel more exposed and go defensive. Try filling up the space you created with the foliage again or something else he can hide in. At least he's calm when you put your hand in though. If it's not that he's maybe just going through a p***y mood. |

It didn't happen to me but i think this is normal SNAKE (not just RP) behavior. Every time you came across a snake or walk beside one he must do that to scare you away.
But this is wild snake behavior! don't think CB snake should do that! |
