Hello, my young Royal (2ft, 320g) is currently in a large faunarium about 14"Long x 9"Deep x 7"High with a hide, large water bowl, branch, heat pad & stat. He is generally active and spends a lot of his time climbing about everywhere and checking out everything inside, outside & above, resting in and out of his hide, etc. When I watch him I often wonder if he'd appreciate more room to climb about and do happy snakey stuff. I know Royals can be stressed by too much room etc. and maybe I should just leave well alone, but a nice wooden viv etc. might let him stretch his legs a bit... if he had any... :) Should I just be thankful all is ok or allow myself to be tempted..?!

And remember,he's eating well already. So don't worry about the age or your first weight being alittle off :)

OK, thanks for your advice. I'll crawl away back under my rock now and give you a break until my next post . . I'll be back :0

Go by the 290g reading :)
PythonLeeJackson Posted - 25/03/2014 : 16:58:44
Hasn't eaten..? I can't stop him eating..! Got him on 1st Feb, took his first mouse a week later on on 8th Feb and has taken one small mouse every week since without fail. Forgot to weigh him when I got him, but after letting him settle I weighed him first on 9th March by which time he'd eaten loads but not had a poo yet. I made it 320g but I'm not quite so sure now. Then he shed and pooed bucketfuls, I weighed him again at 290g, double checked and made it the same again. I reckon either (1) I messed up the first reading, or (2)all that mouse eating and not pooing until he shed added up to a lot of extra weight.. He even ate during his shed and ate again last night (one small mouse per week). In fact, he just came out of his hide looking at me expectantly for more nosh just now. Whoever said Royals are hard to get feeding? I think if there was a McDonalds nearby he'd be round there for a BigMac and large fries every night...

If he's not eaten since you've got him from the shop.Has gone poop etc.then weigh him and go by that reading :)

When in doubt, try blaming it on someone else... must be because snakes can't read the scales properly... hang on, I think he kept one leg on the floor... couldn't possibly be anything to do with me... :D

I remember now hehe :P can't see him losing 30g since you've had him.Weigh him after he's gone poop etc.If you've done it wrong when you got him, that will muck up your reading :)

I originally posted on the Introductions forum regarding my suspicions about his age and then I droned on about his messy shed which had just started. He still has one last tiny weeny little patch on his back which won't shift yet and he's lost about 20-30g since the beginning of the month after multiple pooing during his moult. Unless it's just my rubbish weighing ability :( But it's feeding time again tomorrow and he always strike feeds every time so I'm not concerned, although I'll keep an eye on it. He's been out with me again this evening and investigating everything, even watching tv for a while...

If you fill it out, make it look however you want.and it's not just 2 hides/water bowl and 3 foot of aspen.you'll be fine :) and which other forum lol?

... oh yeah... I forgot to say to Boomslang thanks for your comments on his shed (other forum). He finished a couple of days ago. Lots of bits everywhere, but he got there OK over a few days after I began twice daily spraying and a damp sponge in the warm end. I'll try to spot the signs sooner next time.

Thanks for the quick replies. He's my only snake living in my lounge and so I always planned a decent set up in due course. Sounds like I'm going to have a brilliant little project to keep me occupied for a while then.. whoooo... :0

End of the day its upto you :) Just put plenty of fake plants and stuff inside and he should be fine.

a 2ft royal would likely be fine in a 2ft or 3ft viv long as there's plenty of cover and several hiding places

Does he feed well all the time?
