Posted - 26/06/2014 : 17:29:16 So I get to pick up the latest addition and first Royal Python on Saturday. A late CB13 normal.
I'm pretty much sorted with equipment and just want to find out a couple of things.
First what is the best substrate for an RP? I have no preference at the moment. My corn is on Aspen but will be changing to Lignocel when that's used up.
Feeding. Is this best in or out of the Viv/RUB/Faun? My corn is fed outside, however I'm aware that RPs are notoriously finicky. Is there any point to trying to feed outside. I prefer the idea of keeping feeding and living place separate.
Frequency of feeding. How often should a 7-8 mnth old be fed? Are there any feeding guides for RPs. Again I'm aware that the prey weight should be 10/15% of the RP.
I think that's it. I think I have everything else covered thanks to the info available here. |

Posted - 04/07/2014 : 00:28:15 Mine is always fed in his viv, but I get him out whilst the rat is thawing, that way he's awake and alert when I put him back in right before giving him the rat. That way he never gets the "viv opens, rat comes in" reflex built up, as well as making sure he isn't just sleeping the night away when the rat is delivered.
And I use aspen, haven't had any problems, though sometimes it is a bit tricky to keep humidity up, especially in winter. |

Posted - 27/06/2014 : 13:44:17 Thanks guys. Good advice to consider.
I was thinking of Orchid Bark for the same reason but use Aspen to start just to get it used up.
I'll find out how the shop feeds and then take it from there but was thinking of feeding in the viv for this one, |

Posted - 27/06/2014 : 02:36:37 Substrate wise i allways use orchid bark for my royals but use aspen for my corns think the orchid bark holds a bit more humidity for shedding time but as said others have used aspen with no problems i just prefer bark :)
Feeding wise with a young snake i feed mine every 7 days but as the snakes grow and start to be come adults thats when i cut back to every 14 days but that isnt allways a guideline lol as i only have 1 female that allways takes everytime i offer the rest can be picky feeders :(
And for the size of food i never weigh my snakes food i just go by the thickest part of the snakes body if the rat is roughly that size its good enough :) |

Posted - 26/06/2014 : 23:38:47 I'm sure others will add to my thought, but here's what I've picked up...
Substrate: I use aspen and it seems to be no problem. Check on some of the other posts here about the lignocel cos some snakes have choked on it recently.
Feeding: you'll get mixed views on this but from what I've seen the majority don't feed in a separate container. I don't either. I've found that what works best for me is when Mr Snake is in her hide. Any time I get a strike it's when she's in her hide and I bring the rat to the entrance of the hide. Once again, that's what works FOR ME. From what I've learned what works for some doesn't necessarily work for others.
Frequency: others chip in here but I think the guideline is 10%-15% body weight every 5-7 days until around 500g, then every 7-10 days until around 1500g, then every 10-14 days. Others might be able to confirm this or correct me but I think that's the right ball park.
Anyway, hope this helps. |
