Posted - 09/07/2014 : 20:32:31 I've been reading about shedding and what can go wrong on the forum and wouldn't you know it, Sammy has had his first shed with me that's turned into the shed from hell.
I probably didn't get the damp flannel in the viv quickly enough because I didn't know when his eyes first went cloudy. I had been waiting for the third feed before handling and when I got him out noticed his eyes. However, the flannel doesn't seem to have made much of a difference because his shed came away in lots of tiny strips with quite a lot of patches of it solidly glued to part of his back and his sides.
He has just had a warm bath in a rub which didn't seem to distress him and once in a towel, the retained shed on his tail did come off but not a lot else. There is also a patch on his head which looks firmly attached (and I think there was when we brought him home from the reptile centre).
I'm going to put a wet flannel on top of the hide directly under the ceramic to try and increase the humidity again, or is this wrong? Is there anything else I can try - I'd planned another go with the bath tomorrow but any suggestions would be really good.
Sorry for the slightly long and rambling post but I'm worried about leaving him with bits of skin still attached.

Posted - 11/07/2014 : 21:55:35 I`d also say that if your going to permenantly puta damp hide in the viv then you don`t have to use spagnum moss as it will get a bit smelly after a few days. you could do one with a bit of sponge inside or a flannel. Its more hygenic that way. |

Posted - 10/07/2014 : 20:45:21 hey, no problem. some people do leave a damp hide in all the time so leaving it in wont cause any problem's unless it keeps the viv way too humid which is unlikely unless it's drenched in the hide. if he decides to use it then he should be able to work some of the stuck bit's off by himself |

Posted - 10/07/2014 : 20:41:26 Hi chrisc and thanks! If you don't mind, a quick question - is it still a good idea to try the damp hide, Sammy shed two nights ago now, and if I put a damp hide in, how long do you think I should leave it there? I've read other posts on here that suggest only putting the hide in during shed and then taking it out again. Not sure if there's a point at which he's stuck with the old bits of skin until next time or if it could come of at any time? |

Posted - 10/07/2014 : 20:26:11 to help getting the remaining shed off as well as upping the humidity put a damp hide in the middle of the viv so he can hopefully get some off himself. theres also the trick with a slightly damp pillow case but personally this has never helped when ive used it.
as well as putting a damp flannel under the bulb spray the hot end of the viv with water twice an day mainly on the wall's and a little on the floor under the bulb so that area doesnt stay wet. i just spray my snakes now when in blue as find this works well on it's own without needing a flannel rewetting every couple of days |

Posted - 10/07/2014 : 20:24:01 Thanks Kelfezond and hodgie for your advice.
I think he's going to have to stay a scruffy royal til next shed and hopefully I can get the humidity up. I'm not going to bath him again this time and as he's just scoffed down a mouse I'm hoping he can't be too bad.
Hodgie - you're right, my humidity level isn't high enough, I struggle to get above 50%. I already have an Exo Terra Ex-Large waterbowl and couldn't get anything any bigger in! I did have a damp flannel on top of the hide under the ceramic (ceramic on left of viv, hide underneath, waterbowl in middle) but this still didn't seem to work. Will try a moss hide for next time as well to see if that does the trick!

Posted - 10/07/2014 : 19:28:36 This has happened because your humidity levels are too low, you could easily solve this by getting a large water bowl or keeping a damp cloth in there all the time. |

Posted - 10/07/2014 : 11:45:36 As long as the eye caps and tail are gone I wouldn't worry about the rest it will naturally come off you'll just have an ugly little royal for a while - sometimes on truly terrible sheds I've even had to wait until the next shed before it all comes off.
It can't hurt to put the flanel under the ceramic to raise humidity that'll help, I wouldn't keep bathing him though unless you really need the shed off quickly. |
