Posted - 07/11/2014 : 16:49:54 Hi new to snake keeping. I have a 12 week old royal python. Think I have got his viv set up ok. Temperature at warm end is currently 32 cool end says 18 according to infrared thermometer. He seems to prefer the cool end and doesn't seem to move around a lot. I've only had him a week he's due for his first feed tomorrow. Is this normal or do I need to adjust the temp on his stat? |

Posted - 15/11/2014 : 09:55:05 Hi Myrthil. I could tell straight away with that temperature difference that you had a heat mat. This is due to heat Mats being a contact heater, it will only warm what is touching it. Your snake may be in the cool end all the time as the heat mat is running too hot so my question is do you have a thermostat attached to the heat mat? Next question is what type of thermometer are you using and how are you measuring the temperature of the surface of the heat mat? |

Posted - 10/11/2014 : 16:04:24 Hi Mythrill, I would remove the heat mat, snakes & heat mats don't go well together due to thermal blocking by the snake sat on the mat, this can cause a nasty burn to the snake with a very undesirable outcome. Your best option is a ceramic bulb in a protective cage connected to a pulse proportional thermostat. Hope this helps. |

Posted - 08/11/2014 : 16:59:30 How warm is the room you keep it? 18 inches isn't big for such a steep difference. I'm surprised it's so steep. Are you measuring the temp of the floor of the terrarium? |

Posted - 08/11/2014 : 12:07:58 The Viv is a 18inch monkfield terrarium, and is heated with a heatmat connected to a stat on the warm side. Do you have any advice on increasing the cool side temp?
Thanks |

Posted - 08/11/2014 : 10:58:59 Hi and welcome. How big is your viv? 18 degrees on the cool end is too cool (which I'm assuming you know because the title suggests you have concerns). It should be around 26 degrees. If you viv is big then the heat on the warm end won't be enough to warm up the cool end. |
