well got my digi thermometers off the ebay link provided above and the are spot on, they show just how inaccurate the dial thermometer is!!!

I might make an inbetween piece with chicken wire and wood prob aninch or two wide strip to ventilate the tank, would that make iit leak too much?

its an old fish tank with glass lid,the substrate is aspen and I may be answering my own question here but there is hardly any ventilation!!!

that might explain the humidity
is there anyway you can fashion a new lid? or get a wooden viv/plastic rub (as they are dead easy to ventilate)?

i'm pants woth *f lol i use *c, but that's the same temps i go for too :p

Can you post some pics of your set up? Humidity can be affected by numerous things like choice of substrate, amount of ventilation, etc. Bung some pics up and we should be able to get the humidity sorted

yeah, but remember that is a dial thermometer, you wont get an accurate reading till you get a digital one...

dont worry about humidity on a dial either, i just use my dial as a guide, like if it was to fluctuate heavily i would know there may be a problem...room humidity is normally fine...

Or if you can afford a bit more these measure the temps at both ends and can be set to sound an alarm if it goes outside a set range.

in an ideal situation u should get at least 2 digital thermometers as the dial ones are not very accurate.
one in the warm end (yup so u have the hottest part) and one in the cool end. we say on top of the substrate as that is where ur snake will be ;)
Simonas Posted - 02/07/2009 : 22:35:55
its a dial I;ll go and move it now, ta is that so I know what the hotest temp in the tank is and rest wikll be cooler?
MissCat Posted - 02/07/2009 : 22:33:05
the thermometer (is it digital or dial btw?) is best under the ceramic heat source, on top of the substrate, does that alter the temp reading at all? :)
Simonas Posted - 02/07/2009 : 22:25:41
the water bowls as far from ceramic bulb as i can put it, i'll turn temp up a bit now
the thermometer is about 7 inches from bulb does that effect your reply regarding temp?

cheers for answer by the way
MissCat Posted - 02/07/2009 : 22:23:56
temp needs to come up a tad to roughly 87.8 (warm end) and humidity needs to come down a bit if u can (where have u got the water bowl?)
