Laura: I would have thought that would be fine. The main thing is the weight, however I wouldn't suggest feeding any snake more than two prey to make up the 10-15% weight target. So what you said should be good!

When you move up a size the general rule of thumb is as long as the prey is no wider than 1.0-1.5 X your snake's widest part (ignore head and neck as they can stretch alot!) this is fine.

Simonas: Glad to hear he is fattening up! I misread the weight gain to begin with. Chester is approaching 3 ft @ 1.1KG so yours should hit this very soon! ;->

My royal is about 18-24 months, we think, certainly no older. He weighs 1.1KG so that will hopefully give you an idea. Also my corn snake weighs 900grams, although they're longer a royal is heavy bodied so without photos its hard to say but by fattening him up he should be aroung the KG mark soon enough!

Hiya, i just have a quick question relating to this.
I weighed prince today and he is 279g i am feeding him a rat fluff every
5 days, or 2 just to make sure they are 10 - 15% of his weight.
I have 25 rat chubs left will it be ok to give him these, either 1 or 2
depending on the weight and then move onto weaners?
Blackecho Posted - 27/10/2009 : 13:16:09
From 800-1200g (roughly), I feed every 10 days.
Simonas Posted - 27/10/2009 : 07:46:19
on 4th august he was 680grams hes now had 5 rat whichseem huge in comparison to the mice he was taking.
weighed him last night three days after last feed and hes 900g!! he feels a lot heavier and looks a fair bit chunkier.
I can;t measure him properly but hes about 3 ft 4 I guess
How often should I be feeding the small rats which are about 120g in weight?

also, just to add, I know royals that never progressed past mice in their lifetimes, they all lived long lives and were perfectly fine, so it isn't a really big deal, it's just we know more now and are aware what sizes royals can really achieve (well, weights more than sizes)

680g ain't very heavy for a three year old snake. Stig was that weight at about 8 months. Converting to rats at that age will take time, lots of scenting etc, and try following one mouse with a small rat fuzzy or the like.
You could always just feed multiple xl mice to beef him up.

Been reading lots on here about feeding and i am more worried now than when i started.
i never got feeding / sheding records from the shop and was told my royal is about 2 months old and only eating pinkies had her? a week and fed her and it was gone in seconds do you think i should give her something bigger ?????

I've just weighed him on analogue kitchen scales and hes 680grams according to them? does that sound bout right

i use digital as well and i picked up a set as cheap as the normal ones around £5 and they a great set to and even tested the weight to others to see how right they was and there was no diff,
you dont need to get a set thats gonna cost you alot just a set thats big enough
shep6413 Posted - 31/07/2009 : 23:05:11
as for food, you are looking at around 10%/15% of the snakes body weight
Blackecho Posted - 31/07/2009 : 21:29:07
A large mouse is about the equivalent to a small weaner.

I use digital kitchen scales, the weight can vary between snakes.
Simonas Posted - 31/07/2009 : 21:25:13
I've bought a small rat today and the difference in size from that to large mouse is substantial
I don;t know what he weighs, do you guys just use kitchen scales to weigh? what should he weigh I;ll try some analogue scales now for a rough guide

he's going to need multiple mice if he wont take rats

How much does he weigh, this is more relevant than age.
diesel Posted - 30/07/2009 : 19:36:08
there is and more fat so alot better for a under weight royal as well
Simonas Posted - 30/07/2009 : 19:33:16
brilliat cheers for tht. I read somewhere that theres more nutrition in a rat so I;d like to get him on them!
diesel Posted - 30/07/2009 : 19:31:08
alot will say rats for royals and id agree and id try and get him taking them,
plus i think a ex large mouse aint big enough and try him on rat weaners and move him up a size as some wont eat them cause they are bigger than what they are used to and for what iv read on here (as iv all babies) feed there adults every 10days ish
