My new royal arrives today. I set up my RUB last night and had a steady temp of 28.5 in the hot end of the RUB. I played about a bit with it and left it over night, now at 29oC. I have no idea why the temp isn't rising.

My set-up is a RUB, digi thermometer at each end (26.3 and 28.8oC), heat mat on a stat. I've put in a few hides etc. I have even botched some polystyerine (bad spelling!!!) for under the heat mat as insulation. Oh, and hydrowhatsit at 55%.

I have now covered the RUB up so hopefully retains more heat, and if anything i haven't drilled enough air holes...

Any ideas of how to get the heat up, and sorry, i do not have the facility to upload a piccy at the mo :(

EDIT: Forgot to say, the heat matcovers jut over 1/3rd of the tank. I do have a mat for my viv that is about a meter long, is it worth getting that involved?? Also, i'm using kitchen roll as substrate

Cheers

If it's near 30 you'll be fine, probably find it s scorching inside the hot hide (heat rises and traps in the hides)

I guess i'm lucky its a nice day today, with the RUB covered the hot end is now nicely at 32.3c. Not only that he is now on the move exploring the tank :)

The records i've been given say he was lat fed on the 1/8, but shed on the 10/08. He has had 6 feeds, 4 taken on his own. Do you think its worth trying to give him a feed in 5-7 days as its been a while or wait the full 7-10??

heat mats run on mat stats are a pain to get right..mine average out at 30-31 sometimes a little lower, the best way to get good consistent heat is with a pulse stat...

it will probably settle around 29-30..

try not to handle for the first seven-ten days either, just water changes..

Its settled at 31.6c. Gary has grown attached to the box he was shipped in and hasn't dared venture out. I've covered the RUB and will leave him be for now, if temptation can be resisted lol

I've put my stat on full blast, 33c.

Anyway, Gary has arrived, if you'd like to let me know how to put a pic on i'll upload one from my phone. He's a shy fella after the TNT man has had his hands on him.

The heat pack they sent along with him will help raise it a bit, at 30.4c now so slowly getting there and only just added the heat pack outside the RUB next to the warm hide

Also all my Royals are in Rubs and all my stats are set to 88F which i think is about 31c ish so what you have should be fine and all my royals are doing perfect at those temps

Have you tryed turning the heat up on the stat a little bit so you get the right temp inside the rub

Do you think i could of bought a box made of plastic that doesn't conduct heat very well? Have you heard of that before?? Clutching at straws a little I know!
Remmy Posted - 14/08/2009 : 09:49:38
You still need to get the temp up to 32c if you can

I have had the lid on. Didn't at first but has been overnight! I've got one of the habistat ones, had it a few years but defo works, the heat mat is hot to touch.

I have a digi exo terra thermostat at each end of the rub, almost an identical set-up to the one off of the DIY page. Measuring the heat straight from the kitchen roll substrate...

Since changing from 3 sheets to 1 sheet of kitchen roll for sub the temp has raised to 30.3oC

Thanks in advance for the help, much appreciated
