Posted - 11/09/2009 : 20:53:40 hey my substrate for my viv is dark bark chippings, and being fresh they have got quite a moist feel to them. however this has made the humidity rise to 91% and was just wondering how long it takes for the chippings to dry out, cause i am getting my snake in three days time and so if they cant be dried out by then is there anything i can do to dry it out quicker |

Posted - 12/09/2009 : 11:04:34 i find the orchid bark raises the humidity too much for royals. news paper is the way forward!!! unless its a display viv. then maybe beech chip. |

Posted - 12/09/2009 : 09:38:19 Newspaper or kitchen towel is fine, obviously white kitchen roll is easier to spot black mites on though.
Some people keep their snakes on newspaper forever though, so no, the ink will not hurt. |

Posted - 12/09/2009 : 09:34:16 I would buy some cheap white kitchen roll from your local supermarket |

Posted - 12/09/2009 : 06:36:24 ok thanks
i will. the ink from a newspaper wont hurt the snake will it, and how many sheets of newspaper thick does it have to be |

Posted - 12/09/2009 : 00:32:21 The reason it's a good idea to put new arivals onto paper is so you can notice if it is carrying mites,as they would show up on white paper but not a chance in hell of spotting them on orchid bark,i would keep it on paper for about 4-6 week to see if it has any. |

Posted - 11/09/2009 : 21:47:01 I use orchid bark, but i always bake it first. This not only dries it out a bit, but kills any nasties. |

Posted - 11/09/2009 : 21:23:40 I would put them in the oven to dry them out. As matty said if it is a new arrival you could use paper or paper towels. I use beech chippings for my royal |

Posted - 11/09/2009 : 21:01:44 bearing in mind i got to put some more vent holes in the viv, although it has already got two, they are quite small |

Posted - 11/09/2009 : 21:00:53 it most likely orchid barkings the shop i am getting them from is using them and it is what my uncle has used for his snakes from when they were teeny weeny babies, unfortunately i cant ask him for help cause he is abroad somewhere. someone suggested putting them in the oven at 160oC for an hour or so would this be ok to do

Posted - 11/09/2009 : 20:55:43 Its probably orchid bark, I dont like it personaly. I use aspen, I find it alot better.
As its a new arrival I would probably use paper though. |
