Posted - 12/10/2009 : 11:52:39 Ok, So i am getting my 09 royal in a week or so, i have just ordered my pulse thermostat and hydrometer and thermometer, so i am unsure of my temps at the moment. But i need advice on the decor of my enclosure
Is my heat mat big enough? Have i made enough holes? I am using kitchen towl as substrate, is that ok? Is the water bowl ok, or do i need to get a different one? I also have toilet rolls to put in, and another bit of wood. I have baked the wood till it was hot to make sure it is safe. Any advice would be great |

Posted - 13/10/2009 : 12:49:30 its hard to get an ambient temp in a rub...
as Ali says as long as the substrate is not to thick it should be fine... |

Posted - 13/10/2009 : 12:31:45 Thanks again, I am just waiting for my pulse thermostat , digi thermometer and digi hydrometer to arrive in the post. I have put the heat mat on today, and when it all arrives, i will be able to adjust it correctly. I have read that the ambient air temp of the tank is the most important thing Is this true, and will a heat mat be suffient to make this correct?

Posted - 13/10/2009 : 12:06:24 TBH the mat should be fine to get up to temp providing your substrate isn't too thick
it's worth investing in a digital thermometer for measuring the temps, either one than can measure the temps at both ends, or 2 single thermometers........... i picked mine up on ebay at quite a reasonable price. then set your stat according to the temperature that the thermometer is showing, disregard what the stat is actually 'set at' and just turn it up or down as required |

Posted - 13/10/2009 : 10:04:02 Thanks Gingerpony, That was really helpful, i have taken your advice, changed the water bowl and turn't the heat mat around. i have taken the wood out for now, added a marge tub and a plant pot for hides I am just waiting for my thermostat and if the temps are not right, i will get a bigger heat mat |

Posted - 12/10/2009 : 20:35:04 oh and kitchen roll is fine as a substrate for royals in RUBs.......
for the wood bake at just over 100*C for an hour or so - will be very hot when you get it out!
and you might want to add some more holes in the other end of the RUB, either in the box part or the lid, for better ventilation.....
sorry, i'm trying to think of everything!! lol |

Posted - 12/10/2009 : 20:32:14 i'd turn the heatmat at 90* to how it is in the pic so there's a definite warm and cool end, ideally it should cover one half to one third of the floor space.
if the plastic tub is the water bowl its likely to get tipped over on a regular basis, ceramic dog/cat water bowls, big enough for the snake to fit into should it wasnt a dip, are ideal.
2 hides preferably that are cosy for your royal, if the hide is too big then they can get stressy and not feed, though i like Anne's idea of having a hide that they can move between the hot and cold ends without being seen lol
and more 'cover'.... be it shredded paper (which i use for my royal and boas) crumpled up newspaper, fake plants.......... |

Posted - 12/10/2009 : 12:50:25 Oh thanks, that was really helpful. I have added a marge tub, a plant pot, and the toilet rolls. Now just have to wait for my thermostat to arrive so i can check on temps |

i have two of those one in the cool end and one in the warm end, plants i only have the one and it is just so as to give cover so my royal can hget from one hide to the other with out being seen if she wants..
