Can anyone see any reason I can't adapt this method to make some hides? Will it be safe/strong enough?

I think they were in on a VERY low heat for about 14 hours (2 working days)

Those look awesome man!!! Seriously!! So how long do you reckon each one is in the oven for in total? Just trying to get an idea here...a day could be 8 hours or 18 hours lol

More hides ready for use...

I'm sure it will go in a day or 2.

I've just painted one of these hides and it looks great! However it stinks of spray paint, bit worried about the fumes for snake. Should I just leave it a few days or so? It is dry but smelly.

Shesh a day! Yer you should sell some to recouperate some money for the gas bill! HAHA. Really wanna make 'em but bought some from 888 before I saw this ;-<
Blackecho Posted - 08/11/2009 : 19:14:26
You should sell them!

Have now made 8 salt dough hides, and I've found that the lower the temperature the better. To save on the gas bill I've been putting them in the top of the oven when I'm cooking and leaving the door closed for ages. When they're nearly dry I put them next to a fan heater to make sure they're completely dry before painting. When it says ages it means about a day!

i always wondered that, ages?? it could mean any amount of extremely long time. hehe

Nadine how long did u put in oven @ 100*C? Instructions say ages but not how long?

Would you say they're water proof anyone? If you put enough laquer on etc?

What varnish/sealant do you use? My "log" looks fantastic, went for a look around local shops yesterday (on half term, I'm bored already!) and I have to say I'm quite impressed with my effort! Not sure what the gas bill wil be after having the oven on for so long though...

That salt dough method is the dog's you-know-what..... I just wish I saw this before my online order I made Saturday for 2 new hides for my corn! AARRGGHH! Never mind. Very useful for the future.

Made a salt dough hide that looks like a log. Just needs painting! I need someone with a pot of money so I can change everything I want to at work with out me and my husband giving up all our spare time! Worth it to give the animals the best though, even if it's not my job description!

Blackecho Posted - 24/10/2009 : 17:37:45
