Hi again sorry if this topic has already been touched upon, I did do a quick search first. I went to feed Bob last night a small rat and he was intersted straight away. He struck, constricted for a short time and then just stared at it. Left the rat in the viv for a couple hrs with the viv covered but nothing. The sliding glass was open on one side after I fed him and I was staring in from a distance. Did I put him off or is this a common thing with royals?
Thanks. Rich.
P.s still busy trying to read the whole forum.

Another great tip, thank you BE

If you put it directly in water you will also wash some of the scent off which will make it less appetising to your snake. Putting it inside a sandwich bag and then in the water will keep it dry and all the scent on.

BE i warmed it up in warm water, i didn't know that you had to dry it off. hairdryer purchased today. Cheers Robert.
funny thing is I've never had to use one before lol. (black guy with no.1 all over)
another learning point. Think ill ever get there?

I always use a hair dryer if the food is damp after derfost and also warm the head a little more at the same time, good to hear that he fed :)

Why was the rat wet?
Royalbob Posted - 15/11/2009 : 15:04:34
Thanks for all the advice Bob ate a small rat a dew days ago. He was interested but ignored it the first time round. I then got worried that because the rat was wet if he does eat then some chip bark is going to stick to it and cause problems. I've really been Reading too much and now completely paranoid. I decided to remove bob into a 2ft RUB and try again after warming up the rat. ( realsed after that that was a good way to get bitten) bob stricke fed within a 10 seconds off offering the ray again. I then covered up the rub with a dark sheet and left him. Few minutes later no more rat and a happy bob n rich.

Great advice Robert ang gingerpony. I definately try that if he does it again and yes the irregular feeding days is much more realistic.
Gingerpony this one I warmed up on the viv above the ceramic but last week when he ate fine I used hot water.
Just tried not to get it wet so any substrate didn't stick as I feed in the viv. Still lots to learn and I'll implement all the above the next time round.
Thank. Rich

Q used to strike, constrict and leave it if i'd not got the rat hot enough..........particularly the head
Robert Posted - 08/11/2009 : 20:48:23
If mine don't feed straight away I remove the food and wait and warm it up again and try later, if they still don't strike I will sometmes try at a third attempt which is not often and I find they will feed then, my advice would be to try this and if they still don't feed leave them a few days and try the same thing again, in the wild they might not feed for days and then have a glut, so when they do feed you can try again the following night or leave a couple of days before trying again and if no success leave a week, whatever you do try and vary the feeding days as that mimics the wild state, I have no bad feeders just fickle ones :) . good luck

thats right just checks
Royalbob Posted - 08/11/2009 : 14:18:46
Ok thanks everyone, learning tip there. Wow he really is sensitive. Yes I forgot to mention that I did try warming it back up but he wasn't really interested.
Try again next week. I guess that means no holding just visual checks.

mine did the same 2 days ago. Was feeding him in the feeding tub and was consticting his rat and the girlfriend turned the bathroom light on. Not a problem but the light is connected to an extractor fan so the vibrations made him stop. i just carried on patiently and warmed the rat back up and stated again. Did you try that? Or do as suggested and leave in his viv overnight.

the problem is that you have a royal lol
sexychef Posted - 08/11/2009 : 13:11:04
as dazb says the reason y he left it maybe beceause he got startled by something
dazb Posted - 08/11/2009 : 11:27:25
I would have left the rat in over nite to see if he went back. I would just miss this weeks feed and try again as normal next week.
Royalbob Posted - 08/11/2009 : 10:49:46
Also how long should I wait before next feed?
