hi guys
my viv's temperature is fine (31.6C in the hot end) but i have noticed that the guard gets very hot, i am only able to put my hand on it for a short while. This is the same as the guard in my pine snake's viv even though the temperatures are fine.
I know the guards are meant to protect the snake from becoming burnt, but i think the guard wil do just as much damage.
I dont know what to do because the temperatures are correct.

I know exactly what you mean.
I have a 60w ceramic running with a guard specifically for up to 150w ceramics. It is a full 7cm distance from the bulb.
At the "sieve" bottom end the heat is low, but the metal "top" is pretty hot, which seems bizarre design from manufacturer.
I watched the snake deal with it though. she gets up close to it if she is climbing around, but seems to investigate it but then not try to wrap around it. In any case, if the does the whole guard is flexible and i think it would be hard for her to get a grip.

I have used a 60W heat bulb running on a dimmer thermostat since September. This has caused me no problems in the past, and the royal seems happy enough, never bothers with the guard and generally gets on with her life.
I am only wondering about this issue because when i went to change her water my hand touched the guard and i thought that it was warmer than i thought guards should be, even though I could have left my hand on there.
Like i said there has not been a problem before it could be just me worrying for the simple reason that i touched the guard today and it got me thinking. |

just out of curiosity, what sort of stat are you running? and what wattage ceramic?
would a higher wattage running on say, half power, generally run cooler than a lower wattage that's on flat out all the time?
or the alternative would be a Reptile Radiator or AHS.......in fact the rep rad sounds like it would be ideally suited to this set-up |

I'm not an expert, I'm just guessing. Its unlikely that if it doesn't burn your hand though that it would burn the snake, its considerably cooler than the surface of the bulb anyway. |

i cannot get a bigger guard because the royals viv is only 1ft in height, a bigger one almost touches the floor. I dont think the temperature of the guard is above 60C.
The pine snakes one is considerably hotter, but i have just replaced the 100W red heat bulb with a 150W infra red bulb, so i am guessing the temperatures are adjusting.
Sorry i didnt realise that if the guard was under 60C then it will not burn the snake |

Get a bigger guard if its that bad, but it may not be, if you can put your hand on it, its <60C so shouldn't burn flesh really I'd have thought. |
