Hi folks, I was wondering if someone could maybe post a pic of their heat lamp fixtures up close as I dont think mine is installed properly. When I built the viv I drilled a large hole in the top for the bulb to sit in with the fixture on top. I didnt think anything of it until yesterday when I changed the bulb for the first time and all round where the bulb sits the wood has gone quite black and even a bit charred with the heat. Im quite worried as its in this state that wood can be very easy to fully ignite...

Some pics of how its set up:

yep they both look fine (although of course i'd really recommend buying from Dave )

one thing i'd think about is the wattage of the ceramic - a lower wattage will have to work a lot harder to maintain a set temp than a higher wattage one, but 60w should be fine for a small-ish viv

Ah cool, so I need one of these:

and since im thinking of moving to ceramics anyways, would this bulb fit and be the correct wattage (60w)?: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Geko-Reptile-60W-Ceramic-Heat-Emitter-Bulb-White_W0QQitemZ180470509916QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Pet_Supplies_Reptiles_Spiders_Insects?hash=item2a04e1715c

Thanks again :-)

::EDIT::

I think I'd need a new guard too as the one I made for the red bulb would be too small to include the fixture and I've no mesh left to make another. Will I need to wait till I get the bulb and fixture to get the right size guard?

not sure how easy it is to tell from these pics but there's a ceramic holder like the one picured above, E-T ceramic bulb, gorgeous green guard made by Dave/Reptiles-ink and yes there IS a divider, this particular set-up heats 2 identical small vivs

the type of holder needed for ceiling/wall mounting, screws through from the underneath

yeah i know it's fuzzy............

yeah the fitting you have is for suspension not mounting directly to the ceiling, Dave (reptiles-ink) on here sells them cheaply, i'll see if i can get a pic of my ceramic set up.............

Hmm, does anyone have a pic? My bulb fixture has nothing on it that could be used to screw it to the inside of the viv...

Its definitely a fire hazard the way it is now and I need to get it changed. Ive taken the day off college too just so I can get it sorted, I dont take chances...

yeah when the fitting is screwed to the top of the viv (on the inside) and the wire goes out through a drilled hole is best i believe.

Gingerpony Posted - 24/02/2010 : 10:33:20
ideally the whole thing should be inside the viv with a ceramic holder, either directly fitted to the ceiling or suspended from it, and with a guard surrounding the entire unit. fitted like yours is WILL scorch the wood, may even be a fire hazard!!!
