The heat has went all to pot after getting rid of the heat mat, believe it or not the cold end it warmer than the hot end! (go figure) cold hide is 26.5 hot side is 24.6, dont ask me how this is happening the ceramic bulb is at the same temp it has been since I got it so bulb and dimmer is fine.
I was thinking that if I put a heat mat back in BUT.........
Get a tray the same shape as a baking tray, drill it full of holes, turn it upside down over the mat, cover with kitchen roll then the substrate. This should work the same as just a heat mat without the risk of thermal blocking eh? as there is an air pocket between the mat and the substrate or am I missing the point entirely?
If this is right, I'd get a non heat conductive tray so that the heat would only be coming from the holes and not the tray its self, there would be a stat on the mat as well
Ive read a lot of things can go wrong if they dont have the proper heat environments so I want to get this sorted before the winter starts but not risking a mat alone.

yeah i had same prob, trying to get the hides up to temp, but like blackecho said just get the temps in the viv right, when they in the hide or where ever they can get to sleep then they dont need as high temps my hot side hide is around 84-85 cold side bout 80 but ambient temps in the viv are spot on :) |

I don't have my thermometer probes inside the hides as those sort of temps (32/33C) are their basking temps, you'd expect the temps to be lower when they are asleep in their hides. |

Ive got the ceramic on a dimmer stat. Ive turned up the stat so that the top of her hide is 38/9C at its hottest part, it seems to have raised the hide temp to 28C. Ive got a digital thermometer with the probe on top of the substrate inside the hide.
Only thing is, the ceramic has now heated the place to 39C where she likes to climb and sit so will this cause her any damage if she was to sit there long enough? |

A Ceramic should be easily enough to heat a viv, is it on a PP Stat? - How are you measuring the temps? - Is the stat turned right up? |
