hey guys. some of you know me from corn-snake forum but i am getting a python in april for my birthday but i want to do research before i get it.
what shall i get?
what do i need?
feeding?
housing?
i kinda gather its similar to keep a corn but i want the keepers and experts to give me a little help.
hope you guys can help.

Hi, congrats on the impending arrival!
Royals are a little bit different from corns in that they need a slightly higher temp gradient - 26 cold end to 30/32 hot end. And if you plan to keep your royal in a viv, you will need infra-red or ceramic bulb heating, with the appropriate guard and stat. Unfortunately a royal can't be kept in a viv heated by a mat, as the snake is much heavier-bodied than a corn, and even on a statted mat, the snake's bulk may cause thermal blocking, leading to overheating of the mat. A royal's body will not sense heat as a mammal's does - its chief heat sense is in the pits below its nostrils, which it uses to guide it to prey. Therefore it could get badly burned on a mat. (A statted mat under a rub or faun is fine, of course, because there is an air space between the mat and the enclosure.)
Royals are shy and retiring. They love to cram themselves into hides you would not think they could get into (mind you, my corns are the same) and they love their enclosure literally packed out with hides and cover like a labyrinth. But a sturdy climbing branch, securely fixed, is appreciated too, just in case the royal wants to go walkies.
Corns are said to do best on mice - royals are said to do best on rats. If fed mice they can get addicted ... I'm afraid I have two mouse junkies myself ... going to get them on to rats in the spring, I hope, but at this time of year a royal's appetite can be chancy, owing to their thoughts being on s-e-x lol. It's what royals do, fast at this time of year. (The corns recycle the refused rodents - having just said that about mice, one of my corns enjoyed Shahi's refused rats.)
I've probably left loads of stuff out, so it's a good idea to read all the posts you an on this forum, there is so much info on here, it's a brilliant forum. And there will be more knowledgeable people along soon - I've only had royals for less than 6 months myself, but learned loads on here.
