hey.... today is the last day of settling in for precious. she is in deep blue and has not eaten so i will try feed her when she has fed. can i handle her even tho she is in deep blue or do i have to wait til after she has eaten with me?

I wouldn't wait. I'd offer the food anyway, if the snake eats, it eats, if it doesn't, it doesn't. All royals are different, mine eats when heavily in blue and doesn't mind being handled in blue either. |

The waiting must be so hard. I have to admit to taking Florence home in the car with her wrapped around my wrist! (I wasnt driving by the way) She survived the journey and forgave me and even ate that same night but she was a year old at that point and a very relaxed little girl.
Not handling while in blue is the critical thing i would say as the shedding process is very stressful for our snakey friends. |

I'm not beating myself up I just don't mind admitting I got things wrong. I like to share my experiences good and bad as i'm sure it could be helpful to someone out there. I have things right now which is the most important thing and Duke survived it and is still a beautiful little snake, plus I have the next 20 odd years to make it upto him. On the plus side he hasn't hissed or anything, and has stopped balling up whenever I go near, he is interested, peeking out etc. |

Hey, don't beat yourself up. Brief necessary handling isn't the same as the sort of handling that I call 'armchair walkies' or even the time I had to bath Shahi. Honestly, I don't think you did anything wrong, and sounds like you've got everything right, the way he's feeding for you! |

I've waited three weeks just to get Duke to feed, I have picked him up twice but only moving him to a temporary box while I fixed some issues with his setup. I REALLY wish I hadn't! I have learn't valuable lessons and unfortunately for Duke he had to be dragged along for the ride. I intend on giving him a few more feeds before I start handling (knowing my luck he'll go into shed at that time). Though he is starting to show signs that he is comfortable in his surroundings, he rarely ventures out of his hide but he is watching whats what out the door. |

i would wait as your royal could get stressed as he is in blue so cannot see anything. plus iw ould wait till he has eaten at least once to make sure he has settled. when i got bullet i waited 2 weeks f=to handle him, but when i got bow she didn't eat for 5 weeks, and i only handled her twice during this time and both these were for specific reasons like stuck shed
it is worth the waity for them to start eating properly and then you ahve the rest of there 20 years ahead with them |

yep i would wait till after shed to feed. Then get a few feeds going before the handling. Just like the Aston martin show room i pass on the way to work i'll always be looking but at least you'll get to toch in a few weeks. Time soon fly's by. Also wait a few days after feed before handling. |

When I first got Shahi, someone on another forum pm'd me and told - nay, instructed - me not to handle him on any account until he'd taken four or five feeds with me. Which I did think was pretty extreme!
Then he went into blue the day after I got him and had to be bathed to get a bad shed off ... I was scared to death I'd traumatised him!
And then he was slow to eat and there was a bit of worrying and conflicting advice/info from the shop. I was new on here and daren't say much, just read and read ... luckily both Shahi and I survived.
I'm still confused about the waiting time, tbh ... but I would definitely wait for a snake to shed before handling. Awful waiting though! |

I have seen that the advice offered is usually to wait untill they have had a couple of feeds so to be safe I am going to wait.
