Ive changed Orlina to IR bulb and cant believe the difference, her temps have only shifted by +/- 0.3C for the last 3 weeks amazing compared with the bother I had with the ceramic bulb maybe the ceramic wasnt powerful enough for the size of viv i dono. Anyway...
The Royal we're getting has only had a heatmat with no hide (which will all be changed soon as we get him) so i've been hunting the internet for everything to fit out his viv but the one thing I cant find anywhere is a bulb holder. It has to be heat resistant (obviously) and I want the type that has the housing on it to be screwed to the roof like this -

Theres plenty of the type you see hanging from roof lights but I want it fitted directly to the top of the viv.

The other alternative is to buy guards that have a flap on the bottom held on by a screw that can be undone by hand when the bulb needs replacing, all mine are like this and although they are a little bit more expensive the bulb can be changed in a jiffy and the snake doesn't even know :) |

AND ... a useful little tip I realised a while back ...
When fixing a guard in place, instead of screws, use the smallest size 'screw eyes', which are like conventional screws but with a metal ring in place of the crossply/phillips head. These can be undone/refixed by hand, or if they're a bit stiff, a pencil etc inserted into the ring to undo/tighten - saves fiddling about with a screwdriver inside the viv. Really does save time/irritation/faffing - I promise.
Also the screw eyes are good for attaching climbing branches/vines - just fix the eyes and use stout cord to tie branch in place, and no sharp edges either. |

I don't know if this helps any... you might have already got yourself kitted out, so sorry if this is too late.
I recently went through this issue putting together a small vivarium for my son's new Royal. The best solution I found was to attach the kind of ceramic bulb holder BE was linking to on Ebay, which is also available from Maplin (looks remarkably similar and might even be a bit cheaper if you've got a store near you and can collect)

through to the roof of the viv. The advantage of this guard is that you only need to undo a couple of side screws to take the grill bit of the guard off when you need to change the bulb. And, luckily, the holes that are pre-drilled in the roof of the bulb-guard (which stays attached to the roof) fit exactly the mounting on the bulb holder. You need to chop a couple of bits out of the guard to make the cable to the bulb fit flush but nothing that a junior hacksaw and file won't sort out.
I hope this makes sense. If you need pictures of how I did it, I'll take some for you.
Couple of other things to consider:
1. Make sure you know whether the bulb you intend to fit is a screw or bayonet fitting: I think most are screw but I think both are available. We're using the 75W version of this bulb

and we're very pleased with the stable temperatures, even in a small viv.
2. Make sure the bulb will fit into the guard: it's not as huge as some. The 75W Exoterra one above fits nicely. I hadn't figured (until I actually saw them on the shop shelves)that, unlike household bulbs, the different wattages are actually different physical sizes. Always worth having a spare ready as well!

I got mine from the local reptile shop. It's made of plastic but it shouldn't be a problem if you're using IR bulb. It also have a plug and wire so you don't have to worry about anything. Each reptile shop should have one. |
