Posted - 12/03/2011 : 21:51:51 Hi Everyone,
Just got my first Royal a week ago. He is a beautiful snake (pics to follow).
I left him a week just changing water and checking on him and gave him a feed tonight. I was really worried about hearing stories on how bad they can be with food. He didn't look to interested so I took the mouse and gave it a once over with the hair dryer and he struck and ate with no problems
I was told when I got him that he had regurged a couple of meals before but I think that it was due to poor heating of his RUB. The previous owner was useing the heat of a lamp that was in the viv under his RUB to heat him. He felt really cold to the touch when I picked him up (alot more than he does now).
He is now happy in his RUB with a full stomach and I am made up that there has been no problems yet. I am still not handling though I heard that it was best to wait for 3 feeds before handling.
Well wish me luck and I'll keep you informed on how we get on |

Posted - 12/03/2011 : 22:15:09 I've never felt Duke cold to the touch, so I'd say your spot on with what caused the regurges. Just good he has a good home now. Congrats on the first feed. |

Posted - 12/03/2011 : 22:12:33 Congrats and welcome to the forum. Alot of the stories of Royals being fussy feeders tends to come from inexperienced owners who believe that they should be eating every week, (we`ve all been there ) The truth being that sometimes they just aren`t hungry. |

Posted - 12/03/2011 : 22:11:43 Hi and welcome to the forum - it's a good place to be - I've found it very helpful.
Your little guy sounds to have had a few problems - good thing he's got a good home with you now ...
It'll be a good idea to change him on to rats, if he will make the change (two of mine haven't, so far, so I'm no expert, but it's a lot less bother to feed one rat instead of a few mice when the snake's full size.)
Many royals change to rats with no probs - and the non-feeding reputation is chiefly because during the winter months their minds are on mating and not eating lol - the rest of the year they're usually greedy gannets.
All the best!

Posted - 12/03/2011 : 22:03:07 congrats on the feed, ans as you've mentioned is better not to handle until your royal has had at least 3 consecutive feeds.
And welcome to the forum |
