Hi i am just wondering if it would be a good idea to use a feeding box and what the protocall is for using 1.
What are the pros and cons?
I am currently using bark substrate so thats a good enough reason for me. |

I feed in the viv, less hassal for me, and closer to nature for the snake. They very, very rarley eat small amount of moss or substrate but without ill effects. |

Like Scubadube, have always fed in a separate rub for fear of taking mouthfuls of Aspen in with the rat. Has just worked again this evening and we've been lucky. Kate has fed every time except the times she has been in blue. I'm sure either ways are fine... and every snake is different!
Good luck which ever way you decide.

i feed all mine in their rubs after dark and using tongs. I lift the lid quick and hold the food away from the walls but leave the lid in place which act as a potential shield against some of the more 'exuberant' feeders, but i always heat the food quickly so they zero-in on it straight away. Never been bit and no snakeys been injuried either :)
I think its whatever works best for you :) |

I always feed in a separate box. The snakes that are feeding (3 of the 4) will normally strike feed in under 15 seconds. Still waiting for number 4 to come off his diet. |

I let the snakes decide - and the majority vote is for vivs. I use long tongs for strike feeders and try to keep my hands as free as possible from the smell of food.
To add to all the tips above - in some cases I put the rodent in a small lidded rub with a hole in the side, the kind of thing you'd use for a damp hide. This is especially useful in the case of the exuberant feeder who coils and then rolls all over the place - she puts her head through the hole, the rest of her follows as she seizes her prey, she coils wildly - but she's contained in the box until she's eaten. Then she can get back out at her leisure. |

Have always fed in feeding box until my arms got tired of holding the rat for hours, so the last twice have fed in viv, I put down newspaper Izzy strikes 1st time and eats imm. Zuri on the other hand being a royal as to be different still have to dangle the rat, then i leave on top of hide and 10 mins later gone, but last night didnt work, left in o/night still there in tube this morning, but i think he going to shed. So whatever works for you. |

It's why we changed to feeding in the viv but I'm not sure if it's helped or not as when they're hungry they tend to associate my hand with food, normally they're smart enough to sniff me first and realize I'm human not rat but Diablo gets so excited he charges without thinking :P
I'm not sure if there is any truth to the whole theory behind them associating your hand with feeding time or not, worth thinking about though :) |

I started off always feeding mine in a seperate rub due to substrate ingestion worries, I now find that I usually put a couple of pieces of kitchen roll down before feeding. But both ways are good. |
