Jus had my delivery from surrey pets, dimming thermostat and digital thermometer, where is the best place in the hot end to put the probes, thanks |

I have my probes about a 1/3 of the way in on the warm side about 2" off the floor, and have my thermometer probe under the hotspot and use this to set my thermostat (as this is where i want the hottest point) I find this gives me the required temperature gradient and set up like this in various 3ft and 4ft vivs. |

Ah, from the rear of the viv is the ideal - I did this in Saada's viv as there was a hole that had been used for a heatmat - but found that to prevent the probe from getting obscured by foliage, hides, substrate or snake, I've had to bring it to the front of the viv where I can keep an eye on it ...d'oh!
Shahi's viv was the first one that I fitted a dimmer stat in. The instruction diagram shows the probe dangling, apparently from the ceiling, ten inches away from heat source, as stipulated, so that's what I did ...The flex was curly ... eight months on, it's still dangling there, with a pencil attached by rubber bands to straighten it out ...again d'oh... (though he can't move or obscure it.)
But the temps are FINE! (Although I'm still confused and dim re dimmer stats ... 
However I do wish someone would invent wireless stats!!

like bats I have drilled a hole for my probes, so they are all coming in from the rear of the viv, also means the cables are all hidden. My temp gauge is a 1/3rd of the way in, from the heater to give me an indication if the warm end air temps. my stat probe is halfway in the viv between hot and cold ends (dead center of the viv) the stat of course just maintains the temps I want rather than whats printed on the adjusting dial. I use a laser heat gauge for verifying my temps. |

Do you mean thermometer probe and stat probe? With my hatred of flexes I use a temp gun. If I used thermometers, with the way I arrange my stat probes, I'd have to have thermometer probes in hot and cold ends. People who like to put their stat probes in the hot end do indeed attach hot end thermometer probe and stat probe together - aquarium sealant or cable ties are said to be good. |

Yeah I put mine about a third of the way along. They're tiresome things - have to make sure they don't get obstructed by substrate or moved by snakes. I've tried various positions; now I drill a hole in the side of the viv, at the front end, and inch or so above floor level. I fix a screw eye into the inner side of the front panel below the glass doors of the viv, about a third of the way along, again an inch or so above floor level. The probe threads nicely through a smallish screw eye and is further secured by a cable tie - and it and its cable can't be seen inside the viv - do hate flexes everywhere, though of course it can be seen outside, but you can always use gaffer tape for trailing flexes outside the viv if they are a nuisance. Well, this is what works for me. |

Trial and error matey, mine is under the hot end for diablo but for some reason if cleo's one is under the hot end even at full power on the thermostat it doesn't reach the temperatures I need so I have to put the probe nearer the cold end in hers. |
