Posted - 28/06/2011 : 16:18:47 Hey guys, My 18x12 Litre Rubs are on the way tomorrow for the little ones, I'll be using them for royals in the future as well when I breed them which is groovey.
I have to now buy 18 water bowls and 18 hides to use in them, I've checked on blue lizard and various shops but I've found it a real pain to buy hides without seeing how big they are (Small, Medium, Large doesn't really give a very good idea of how big they are)
Any advice? |

Posted - 29/06/2011 : 15:08:21 After a lot of experimentation, I'd personally go for hides that can be washed and disinfected after the snake has made a mess in them, as it will, or else something free and disposable, like kitchen roll inners. Untippable water bowls are a good idea, even for hatchlings, and save time, mess and kitchen roll. Even if something's a bit dear to start off with, if it can be used again and again in a breeding programme, I reckon it will be worth it. And in a rub appearance doesn't matter what it looks like, so there are a lot of alternative ideas, as above, which widens the choice.
ps, isn't there a tip on Snakebyte TV about fitting a plastic water dish in a short length of plastic tubing, to prevent the snake from tipping it over? |

Posted - 29/06/2011 : 14:44:14 I use kids party bowls as hides for my little royals, if they are clear i cover them in paper mache, or the kids do :-) |

Posted - 29/06/2011 : 10:34:54 Thanks Kelf I've only ever used vivs and with future plans in mind a rack system would be the best bet but having never used one before I want to be able to get it right...
Just out of Interest could you post details about your rack like what heat cable your using and what length it is etc etc... |

Posted - 28/06/2011 : 21:32:45 Reptilemadd, i'm using heat cables so i'll probably have the probe in the back of my rack and a digital thermometer to measure each individual rub, at the moment however I have a heatmat with a matstat and the probe is in the centre of the hot end.
Thanks for the input guys. |

Posted - 28/06/2011 : 19:35:15 Hi Kelf It's slightly off topic but I thought I'd ask you since your sorting yours out, where exactly do you place the probe for the stat in the rub as I'm thinking of using them myself in the future.. |

Posted - 28/06/2011 : 17:58:59 Kelf i've followed a tip from one of the breeders i know and am using half seed trays from B&Q as hides, they fit nicely in a 12l and are 90p each, just a case of cutting a door with a soldering iron, the boys and girls seem very happy with them http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav.jsp?action=detail&fh_secondid=9906528&fh_location=//catalog01/en_GB/categories%3C%7B9372012%7D/categories%3C%7B9372020%7D/categories%3C%7B9372095%7D/specificationsProductType=propagation/specificationsSpecificProductType=seed___cutting_trays&tmcampid=4&tmad=c&ecamp=cse_go&CAWELAID=266991976
edited as found cheaper in 3's |

Posted - 28/06/2011 : 16:54:58 Hi, Surrey pet supplies give measurements of their 'trixie' range of hides - they're cheaper, and very attractive, and not as heavy as the exoterra - could be better in a rack. I'm very pleased with mine.
Wilkinsons' ceramic hamster/rabbit dishes might be good in rubs too, and quite cheap? |
