Rite so substrate . in a viv. hmmm what works the best ? the corns i have a re simple as they are in a faun with kitchen roll , but dexter boa boy is in a big viv with all kinds of deco and aspen . the other day i had found poop , under the water dish , burried in aspen and slightly furry . now i feel terrible i hadnt spotted it before as im vigilant on cleaning , but now i am thinking would it be better to have some other form of bedding which would be easier to change etc ? i was thinking lining paper for wall paper as ive heard its cheap . do snakes mind the substrate they are on ? i mean dexter flattens everything so its not like hes gonna burrow , and hes normally sprawled across his bog wood etc , any help ideas much appreciated :)

all of my snakes are on aspen apart from the boa who is on newspaper, did have a layer of aspen over the newspaper but it was a pain moving that each time i needed to change the pee soaked paper so took it out.
might put him on just aspen or bark once i get him a bigger viv thats sealed better

Ahh forgot all about that. Off to check my B&Q Hodgie. will work out much cheaper than kitchen roll.

lol yeah he def hid away but now its gone hes out again! i didnt smell it and normally i can which is odd , as i can smell the corns straight away

Sanke reacts to poop in the RUB too. She normally gives it away if the nostrils dont peg it first.

yeah will def be more thorough , its coz we had left him alone for abit as he seemed to be hiding more , however now the poo is moved he is back in his usual haunts on show lol!

I have also had a fluufy poo found quite near the waterbowl strangely enough. Its a lesson learned is all and now I am able ot spot a poop from accross the room, its not ideal for a poo to turn mouldy but sometimes you just miss one. I wouldn't change substrate, I like the way bark looks, I am just more thorough with my spot checks now. Dont beat yourself up about it, no harm done.

But the poo had gone abit fluffy and that's what worried me as it had been buried and must have been there longer than I wud have liked . I might try the lining paper trick . See I wasnr sure how u wud spot wee either on aspen . This sounds abit daft its just dexter is the first snake we have who lives in a viv , the little un's are in fauns x

Don't worry, I found some poo under our boa's water bowl the other day, I didn't think she'd fit under there either >.<

Im on hemp, aspen is my usual choice. But hemp is cheaper and looks better imo

Yeh B&Q wall lining paper is brilliant, i wont use anything else, what is surprising is how obsorbant it is. I bought a few rolls the other day, think its around £6.50 a roll or something. (one roll lasts me about 1 year per snake)
As for do snakes mind substrate, i dont think they would care less as long as they feel safe and are fed when they need it.

i have no idea! hes a special guy! no wonder he hid for a few days after! he has his face pressed against the glass at the min im sure hes grinning and pleased with himself! i dont kno how it got under there and buried! lol!

Hi, Hodgie's the lining paper king - hopefully he'll be on soon. It's just occurred to me - I wonder where chip shops buy those sheets of white wrapping paper? They must be cheap, and being food quality they would be totally safe for snakes to live on and do what snakes gotta do ... how on earth did he manage to get it UNDER the water bowl lol?
