Hi guys when you go into the vivarium to get python out where is the best place to get him from, ie near head/ middle of body? especially if he is in corner of the tank at the back. |

I honestly don't know, but the way he's eating and the way he looks, he's doing fine. I've heard that balling up is a defensive thing so maybe he's just a confident royal. 
Yup just means he's confident I think. When I first got [she's still unnamed] she would ball up at the slightest thing and then slowly un ravel, now that she's more confident she never balls but occasionally she'll just hide her head under her neck that's all.

I don't pick him up until he is in his hide, because when he is out he always move his head with my hand
so the way is, pick up the hide, go directly from above to his middle body, and pick him up. he always hisses litlle bit but it's okay if he didn't follow that with a bite |

I've always gone with the rule of never approaching the head directly, always approach from the side. Start with side/middle of body and they wont be so jumpy. Seems to be true! |

rachels only ever struck at me once, but it seemed more of a headbut than a tag. i was moving things inside her viv while she was in there and i think she felt a bit threatened by the movements and all her kit shifting about without her consent. she doesnt ball either, just kinda looks at me with a 'get on with it then' attitude. smug little thing, she knows whos boss. |

LOL - Ziska's biteyness is an ancestral pattern - gophers mimick rattlesnakes as defence display ...
Royals automatically ball up ...you will reach in and find a snake pretending to be a hedgehog...easy to pick up...cup your hands beneath snake ...you will lift out this rolled up creature, talk to him gently; presently you will see a bright eye, a tongue will flick, and your royal is ready to make friends ...
A good guide is to wait until after 3 feeds with you, for a new royal, before anything other than brief necessary handling. |

I've picked up Blitz twice this week, and every time i pick up him he just hisses at me, but as u said, i'm not worry about getting bitten, i don't think it is a big deal. although, i prefere not to be tagged |

Sudden moves. You want deliberate movements with no hesitations but sudden moves send my Boa all bitey. I once got my face too close to Duke and he struck at my face, that was quite a scary experience.
Sometimes you do nothing wrong but misread the mood of the snake, most Royals are placid though so I wouldn't worry about the potential of getting bitten, they are so fast by the time you know about it its already over and even with a bitey snake (i'm thinking my Sanke and BATS Ziska) its rare to actually get bitten. |

I was tagged when I was patting down the substrate and the little royal was in his hide directly in front of my hand lol
It was feeding day and I think he was reminding me he was hungry
What I like to do when I go to pick them up is
Undo the lid of the rub see where the head is and choose about middle of the snake give it a little rub to let them know I'm there and then just pick them up
I do not hesitate about picking them up straight in little rub and pick up lol
They ain't got time to think about striking ;) |

make sure you scrub your hands if youve handled rat/mice before handling the snake
they will smell rat an sense your warm hand an could mistake it for dinner |

I was about to ask few questions about the same thing since i'll start handling Blitz from now on.
I think i got the answers now, but one more question i have in my mind.
When u have been tagged, what wrong did u do ?! (if anyone have been tagged by royal python)

I see he is 6 months old around 20" or so but yes i do enjoy the moment of getting him out but also know that i need him to get used to me, not to sure when he is older tho lol

Thanks guys i was going near the head thinking it would support him better.
How long after feeding tho is the best time to hold him? i fed him Wednesday evening and i ain't seen him yet, i know they need heat to help digest there prey i just don't when is a safe time . |

If its a hatchling its likely to roll, just scoop it up if it does that. If its a big fatty like my Duke is, go for the middle but as soon as you can, get a second hand to the tail end for extra support. |

I find that if you reach in, just touch/stroke the middle of the body before picking up gets them more chilled out, also you'll find that after they've been out for a while they get much more relaxed than when you first take them out. |
