Posted - 26/11/2011 : 17:11:47 OK, so Oscar is still eating mice. He's on a large one every five days. He's eaten 22 times in succession and is putting on weight, slowly but surely.
Now, what I'm thinking is: if I try now to put him on rat weaners and he doesn't like them, will he go into a fast?
I don't want to encourage him in that at all, so I'm wondering if to just get him through the winter and maybe try the rats about March time. What d'ya reckon? |

Posted - 02/12/2011 : 16:40:19 Well, I hope so. I've not seen 'owt but his back for 2 days. I don't know if his eyes are clear or not yet but I'll not attempt to feed him again until he's shed this time. |

Posted - 02/12/2011 : 16:06:38 LOL - they do but according to A&N the biggest mouse is 45g average - 15% of Oscar's bodyweight.
I'm sure he'll take his big mouse like a man! |

Posted - 02/12/2011 : 15:55:29 The decision has been taken out of my hands. He can't get the size I need at the moment so Oscar is going on to Extra Large Mice. Mind you, they do look BIG!!! lol. |

Posted - 27/11/2011 : 19:26:04 I think a small weaner would be fine for him - according to my supplier that's 37g ...according to the thoughts of Chairman Blackecho, feed 10/15% of royal's weight ...If in doubt get the shop to weigh it ...otherwise a large rat fluff ...
Go for it Oscar!

Posted - 27/11/2011 : 19:05:38 Well done Shiva.
I don't think I'm too worried about Oscar taking to the rats, he loves his food and I reckon he'll eat them no prob - I just don't know whether to try him now or wait a couple of months, lol.
Also, if I do start him, is it weaners I need? He's not really that big and doesn't even weigh 300grms yet (at least, he didn't last weigh in). |

Posted - 27/11/2011 : 15:48:09 Good luck - Shiva, who was feeding on mice when he arrived, has just had his third rat today, and is now officially on small adult rats every 10 days (until the Great Fast of course!)
Sorry for hijacking the thread a bit, bursting with pride, just mean to say, it may be easier than we think! |

Posted - 26/11/2011 : 17:23:59 I waited until after the fast with Shahi, and it worked, albeit by accident ...

BUT - they are all different!
Shiva came 2 weeks ago and was being fed on mice ...he's 09 and could go into the fast any moment; as he's an adult from the US and could have fed on rats in the past I just thought I'd try him with a rat ...he was fine. Surahi's an 06 and was said to eat nothing but mice, but the first time I tried her with a rat, she took too.
I reckon if Oscar's planning to fast, he'll fast, and offering a rat won't alter matters. With hindsight, I reckon I could have tried rats with Shahi far earlier, and I think if you've got it in your mind to try rats on Oscar, it might just be 'meant' - he might just surprise you, and would be brilliant to get a rat or two into him before the big fast.
Only my opinion mind, but I'd chance it. Good luck! |

Posted - 26/11/2011 : 17:23:45 Try one smaller mouse, followed by an equally sized rat, defrost them together, roll them about together (play mouse vs rat wrestling) feed the mouse first then offer rat, if he doesn't take the rat at least he has still had a bit of a meal. |
