So after a long day working I came home to a great surprise of mites! Little sods. Don't know where they have come from. So I've disinfected everything. Bathed and frontlined the snakes. Just hoping it kills the little buggers! |

Oh boy I wish!
If only we could use some sort of hanging insecticide card, well away from the snakes but there to zero any airborne nasty, or, if once mites were seen, the sort of back-of-the-neck application stuff that, available on prescription from a vet, will zap a mild infestation of cat fleas (although a second application may be needed to break the life cycle) ...but these, sadly, aren't on the market where snakes are concerned.
I believe some people use Callingtons spray as a precaution - zapping a viv for a new snake (and quarantining it too.) Though personally I'm not too happy about using chemicals of any sort, unless they're really needed.
As the rep hobby grows, however, maybe reptile mite insecticides will be updated to the level of small animal parasite control. |

Is there any thing you can use to stop the mites in the first place, like some sort of anti/miter lol |

Took them to work to treat them with frontline yesterday and so far it has worked. Haven't seen a mite on them. So hopefully have the all clear now.
Mites are microscopic at stages of their life. So it can be hard to tell. Just check your snakes regularly and the water bowl for any black 'pepper Like' spots. I only realised they had them after seeing one crawling over tia. |

Hey sounds silly but I honestly don't no so that's y I ask, how do u no u have mites?? What are the tale tale signs, I no my snakes are ok but would like to no what to look out for!! Thank u |

Thanks bats will have to check that out if this doesn't work. Most of what was on the snakes is now dead. There's just one/two which under the scales right at the top of the neck and under the jaw which are a pain to remove. Spent a good 3 hours picking mites out of tia and Kaiser. Was surprised at how well behaved tey were... for the first 10 minutes. After that they just wanted to explore |

Ah that's rotten luck - every snake-keeper's nightmare. The little suckers can come from anywhere; as they're airborne we could easily catch them in the supermarket if we're unlucky enough to go shopping when another rep keeper with an infestation is in the store ...horrible thought!
Hope you clobber the little censoreds ...have heard good reports of Callingtons mite spray if you get stuck and need to try another remedy. Good luck! |
