hey,
does anyone on here use orchid bark substrate?
I'm having trouble with the humidity as it is too high even tho the temps are perfect, I am pretty sure the substrate is the problem as I re-newed it today, I do not bake the substrate but I treat it with a mite spray but the humidity is concerning me now.
would it be better to change substrate?

thanks all,
I will bake it or dry it out before I change the substrate next time,
the substrate in the viv has dried out a lot today under the heat lamp so the humdity is between 60%-70% now.
plus my lil guy seems to like his new 3' viv, put him in yesterday evening and hes been exploring all day :D
hopefully he feeds well *fingers crossed* |

I bake it at about 180 for an hour or so, stirring it often because the moisture gets trapped under the top layer.
it has a festive woody smell which is a bonus |

as Bats said dry it out in the oven, it retains too much moisture and not suitable for royals straight out of the packet |

Well I wouldn't treat it as a matter of urgency (the xmas blight is upon us bah humbug lol!) but orchid bark IS damp ...you could try baking it, say half of it and then return it to the viv. I'm not an expert as I'm an aspen fan.
Just put it in a cool oven on a baking tray (lowest heat) for say 3 hours allow to cool and see how you go ...pity to waste clean expensive substrate - good luck! |
