How do you make that banner at the bottom with your snake on??
Lorraine Posted - 13/01/2012 : 11:31:22
Hmmmm. Don't like that at all.

Glad he ate it Austin.
austin_89 Posted - 13/01/2012 : 01:08:17
Thanks its the first time ive seen him do that... I worried it might have been to big but after re-adjusting his mouth he was fine

I try to not think anything like that... You should think about the good your doing for em

Congrats Austin - glad he ate it, that's great!

Yes, Lorraine, captive farmed means they've been taken from wild burrows in Africa I'm afraid ...when I look at Shahi and Saada I always think, how did you guys actually make it all that way??

(And also ...who didn't ...I fear it's like the old tortoise trade in the 1950s when I was a kid and used to see them literally piled up in petshops for sale ...)
austin_89 Posted - 12/01/2012 : 22:50:46
I forgot to write back... He was proper smelling it then just grabbed its head and ate it, without a problem and it was a pretty big rat!
Lorraine Posted - 12/01/2012 : 22:27:31
Yeah, they do that sometimes. He'll probably go back and eat it though.

Do they farm in the UK or are all CF's imported Bats?
austin_89 Posted - 12/01/2012 : 19:47:08
He's still coiled but stopped eating and let it go...? He's just smelling it??

Cool! Congrats!
austin_89 Posted - 12/01/2012 : 19:43:53
Lol well ive just had a successful feeding (well he's still eating) so i think last week was just a one off cause of the new viv/ different colour rat thing...

She's right - I was just stupid ...my gopher, Ziska, regularly strikes at me, but never hurts, and royals are so gentle, I think he'd be as shocked as you if he ever made contact lol.
austin_89 Posted - 12/01/2012 : 18:41:23
Oooh nice! Im still lucky enough to avoid being tagged by mine, surprisingly tho, he strikes so fast!! A friend of mine has told me before about her royal trying swallow her finger!! Lol, but says their bites dont hurt just stings a little...

oh no ...well I can imagine ...poor little ones!!!

Makes me so angry!!!

Despite bringing income to people who might be very low-waged in west Africa, I do think this trade should stop ...

Shahi once gave me a little velcro-bite when I very stupidly moved his mouse to what I thought was a better position for him to feed when he was a baby ...when he'd moved on to rats, he went and did this ...

Rats do really pile the weight on, never fear - Shahi had a bit of a shaky start - his suppliers didn't actually know if he was feeding or not as he was in an enclosure with other hatchlings and they couldn't tell the feeders from non-feeders, and he didn't feed with me at first so I ended up assisting him ...so I didn't dare wean him off mice for a long time, but now he's a real ratter, bless him!

Yes, the cf trade is a bit iffy ...makes me wonder how many small royals do survive it ... I realise there are many people in W Africa who are earning a bare lving from it (apart from the ball paython mafia) and it's true that imported cfs do bring with them fresh bloodlines for breeding.

I can't see that cf royals are in any way inferior though ...just take a look at fatboy slim here ...

I think he was a year old at the time ...
austin_89 Posted - 12/01/2012 : 17:19:45
Oh :( i thought he was quite large but i dont have any experience in owning royals so i didnt know... he's in great shape and has only missed 2 feeds: 1st one he was starting to shed and the 2nd he was still settling into his new viv and was a black/white rat... I read that not alot of people want the CF ones but ive had no problems with my little guy he's got a lovely all be it awkward personality and feeds really well...!

He's only just gone onto weaner rats so he should start growing

It's a low-ish weight ...but, they're all different. My cf girl Saada is small for her age; my cf male Shahi is unusually large, though both are good eaters apart from the great fast.

Your lad looks very nice indeed in his pics and he's obviously eating well ...he looks fine!

I always marvel how our cf royals thrive, after what must be a traumatic start for their eggs in Africa and that long journey and switch from exporter to shop ...it's a debatable and dubious trade, but since the royals are here, we can give them good homes.
austin_89 Posted - 12/01/2012 : 16:08:11
So thats like 8/9 months old then... He weighs 185g aswell... His that about right for his age??
n/a Posted - 12/01/2012 : 15:46:33
Hi, captive farmed royals are 'harvested' as eggs from the burrows in west Africa where their wild mothers laid them. They are incubated and hatch out in April/May and are then exported to the UK/USA and elsewhere for the pet trade.

So your little guy would have been born sometime last spring.
