Hi i recently aquired a royal python i got him from my college as i study animal care but i have been told that he didnt have a great start in life and isnt the size he should be. He is currently 3 years old i wondered wether anyone could tell me what size he should be at his age as i dont no what is normal as he is my first ever snake im usualy a lizard kind of person but decided to go ahead and get him anyways i got him for £40 i thought i got a good deal

They all vary, i have a 6 and half year old Pastel who is just over 1kg, and perfectly healthy. |

The size he is IS the size he should be. He'd be bigger or smaller otherwise lol. They really are all different. |

My royal Tia was also under size and under weight when I got her. This was due to her being neglected by the previous owner. She (I give all my snakes girls names, because I find nice girls names are easier to find than boys)was about 3 years old, 80cm long and weighed 484g. It has been just over 1 year now and she is approximately 1 metre long and weighs just over a kilo.
She's been on hunger strike since the end of November, so I don't know if she'll ever grow any more.
I know you can control the length of a boa by how you feed it, but I don't know if that applies to pythons.
It's logical to assume that if it's underfed during its early years when the most growth occurs, then it may always remain undersized.
I don't know if anyone else can shed any light on this? |

ok thanks i think he has grown since i got him and definetly pileing on the pounds but i dont think he will ever be as big as he should be he is still quite small compared to others that i have seen and hopeful he should be mating him in the future but what would you recomend what morph i have about £200 to spend on a female |

He looks lovely from what you can see, some do get a slow start in life with eating issues and other stuff but they do get there eventually, some are just a bit smaller than others and some are monster sized. You got a good price for him too, look forward to some pics of him all settled in at his new home. |

he looks ok from that pic but can see his body shape that well. if you imagine a cross section of the snake, triangle shaped= underweight, loaf of bread shaped= good body shape, round=over weight.
once you weigh him go buy this feeding guide
Blackecho's feeding guide - feed 10/15% of the snake's weight.
0-400g - feed every 5 days
400-800g feed every 7 days
800-1200g every 10 days
1200g+ every 14 days

congrats on the new addition, heres a weight by age chart but this is just a guide.
what does he weight an roughly how long is he?
if you post a few pics we can say weather his body shape looks good or not
