I collect my 2yr old Pastel next weekend, Viv is all set up, ready to go and I am very excited, My first royal!
Anyway, I digress, my question is this: I have to pick him up from Birmingham which is about 2 1/2 hrs from me, I've got a small 2ft x 18in x 8in viv that I'm going to use to transport him home, will he be ok in the car with the heater on, or should I put a heat pack (covered obviously) in the viv with him? |

well i live in Plymouth and i`ve picked up a royal from Kent, 300 mile drive, close to 7 hours. I`ve also picked another up from Warrington plus many other parts of the country and i`ve never known any to be aggressive when i got them home, you`ll be fine. and two and a half hours in a car is nothing for a Royal. They are alot more sturdee than people give them credit for. |

Yup you got it - snakes, as the saying goes, are wild animals - they might be sweet and cuddly (as mine are and yours will be) but show them a rat on feeding day and - NOM!!!!

Just read your story, I guess it just goes to show, we're constantly learning from our pets. I guess it's easy to get comfortable with them and forget warm and rat smelling = rat every time. |

Lol - I'd be more scared of the hamster bite! (I had a a hamster when I was 10. Called 'Savage'.)
I've got 5 royals and only twice I've been bitten by them - first one (from Shahi as a baby) was just a whiskery tickle when I was stupid enough to rearrange his mouse by hand. And the second (again from Shahi) was another feeding response bite -

Still it left me with nobbut a scratch and you can see it was all my own fault. The royal heat pits, when the royal is hungry, sense animal heat. A rat is a rat even when it's a finger.
The little guy knew it was feeding day, could smell a rat in fact. Thought his lunch had arrived and thought he was being a good lad for feeding.
So, Confucius he say, handle not the royal when it is peckish. And use tongs to offer rat. Then finger will not get bitten.

Yeah, to be honest I've got the Royal to try to get my Mrs more into snakes in general, our Corn is a cracker, but she so fast she's a bit difficult to handle if you're not confident with her, so I'm hoping a more lethargic species will appeal to her. |

I'd take a royal bite any day
Although its very rare
And they just don't strike for the fun of it
It's normal a feeding response

hey, it's gonna happen at some point I'm sure. It cant be as painful as when my daughter's hamster bit straight through my thumb nail!  I'd just rather get to know him first |

fantastic, I've spent the past few months convincing my mrs what passive snakes they are, if he bites me the first time I get him out she'll wet herself! |

He will feel more secure in a rub or pillow case
As the move will be quite stressful
He may be grumpy but you never know till

I've got a small RUB that my corn came in when I first got her, He would fit in, but it wouldn't give him much (if any) room for manoeuvre, would that be better?
I'll take a pillow case also.
I assume when I take him out of the pillow case he's likely to be a very grumpy boy? |

He will be fine for the trip regarding heating
Do you not have a small something to transport him in like a 18 l rub
I'm sure a viv will be fine
But he won't beable to slide much in a 18l rub
And it would beable to sit on your lap |

I use: snake in pillowcase or snake bag, tightly tied, in polybox with air holes. For a couple of hours in a heated car at this time of year that's all I would do, but no harm to use a heat pack or hot water bottle, wrapped as you say.
I'd definitely keep him confined in pillowcase or snake bag though as I feel it makes them feel more secure, even if a snake squirming about in a bag looks a bit grotesque to us.
