Posted - 23/05/2012 : 18:27:40 I am about to buy my first royal, he is 2 years old and the reptile shop recommended I purchase a vivLX 48.. After assembling it I realised its not very high! I have also bought a ceramic heat lamp with a cage over the bulb, and a aluminum dome which is aparantly heat proof! The lamp is bolted to the side and currently sits about 20cm from the floor.. After switching it on for 10 mins I felt the aluminum dome and it was red hot! Am I going to have to put it in a cage? If I do it will touch the floor!? Any ideas what I could do? |

I haven't encountered the reflector thingy myself - this is what I use, and it's fine -

Hope this helps. |

Those dome lightshades with the cage underneath aren't the best for snakes, as they can and most likely will climb up onto it and if its hot enough they will burn themselves. Aluminium is not a good storer of heat, it wont be hot for long when switched off but its not heat proof, it will get hot (think tin foil, its aluminium).
