Hi guys. I left a topic on here before but didnt get much help that time. My python has never eaten by herself since I got her which was in February last year. she wont even eat what i leave in there overnight. I was told about my temperatures and they are around 32 degreed C at the hot end and 28-29 degrees C at the cooler end. She has 2 hides, one on each side, a water bowl and some fake greenery she can hide in. The only way I can get food into her is by force feeding. I have been shown how to do this properly without too much stress for the snake. I hear that gerbils and multis are the best for pythons as they are supposedly irrisistable to them. Is this true? I would love it if she was to strike and eat by herself. Any help or advice would be greatly apreciated. Thanks. |

Well I found that what really gets them going is having warm, almost hot feeds. It may sound disgusting but what I did is got a frozen rat fuzzie and let it defrost on my windowsill for about 3-5 hours til it was defrosted all the way through. Then I got my feeding tongs, boiled the kettle and held the head and top half of the body of the rodent over the steam. Nothing goes into your kettle so dont worry. Personally, I held it over the steam for about 30 seconds and then boiled it again and helt it there til it felt rather warm on the back of my hand. My royal wasnt eating by herself since I got her which was in Feb this year and I have been force feeding her otherwise she wouldnt have anything. But I tried this as a spur of the moment idea and she struck like a natural. Its only happened once for me but I hope it will work for you if you give it a go. Also I was given a 3 year old corn snake which decided to stop eating since she was given to me and this went on for about 4 months, but I tried the same thing the next night after my python struck and the corn did too. To say she just wanted to choose when she would eat by herself is foolish. Almost like saying I done all the stuff you'ze suggested, then she ate on her own. Yes all royals are different, but they still all need the right conditions.

Great! One of my boys strikes, and the other just throws me a dirty look lol... im trying to get him feeding better as hes lost a fair bit of weight and Its concerning now. But ive got a better setup for him recently and temps are going good. Hes more active at night, so im going to try feeding this friday, fingers crossed he takes it the wee brute! lol |

To clear some things up. Im new to royals and have read as many things I could find about then on the internet and asked many questions and also travelled to various reptile shops looking for advice. Also I worry too much about everything. When I said I didnt get much help I mean it as success. I got lots of great advice but most of it didnt make any changes, probably because as you say, every royal is different. however she has finally struck by herself last night. Maybe she wanted to choose her own time to do it. Thanks anywayquote:

It is worrying. I read the care sheet and it said that this can cause alot of stress but I thought I would be ok as I am reletively patiant. When it carried on though I started to freak out a little bit which is why im buzzing all over this forum. She hasnt lost alot of weight but she seems to get a bit heavier then lighter again.quote:

Hey, I totally agree with Stewy, dont expect her to start to strike, Ive had my royal for 4 years or so and still he wont strike, is a picky eater, almost seems scared of the food, but 50% of the time he will eat the rat over night in his own time. So I've accepted he just likes to eat in peace lol... And although he only eats 50% of the time, hes still healthy from what I can see and happy. Has she lost a lot of weight? You should be leaving as long as possible between feeds to help encourage her to eat, then force as a last resort dude.

I stopped replying to the other thread due to repeating myself over and over. We can only tell you what we ourselves would do in this position, which I already have done. You state she has two hides, which she has only had for a couple of days, so that will change peoples advices.
Again, I would LEAVE her well alone for atleast 2-3 weeks MINIMUM. Only entering the tank to do water changes. Also, ditch the mat, which may also not be helping.
You seem fixated on her striking. She may never stike, so you need to be more bothered about her eating alone.
You need to aim on getting her set-up perfected. She will then eat when she feels ready.
I wouldn't be to fussed about paying top whack for gerbils or multi's, as it is possible a multi will make her eat. IMO though, thats just papering over the cracks.
The extra space you have added by removing the partition will add a little more stress for a little while, but I would leave it like that if theres enough plant coverage.
Theres not alot more I can add to this without seeing the snake and set-up.
